Who You Are:

• Getty is embarking on its next wave of innovation in visual storytelling and how to put the perfect image or video in our customer’s hands, be it for a society-changing headline or a brand’s next big campaign—truly moving the world with images. 
• We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to research, build, and deploy natural language processing and natural language understanding models. Using your machine learning and linguistic expertise while considering the broader business context, you will develop industry-leading functionality in visual search across many languages. This position will have a direct impact on the search and browse paths for over 50 million visitors from almost every country in the world, with a direct tie to Getty Images' revenue. 
• In this position, you will lead and own building NLP/NLU models to better understand our customers query intent. Partnering with data scientists, MLEs, search engineers, and product you’ll ensure we are returning the most relevant search results.

Your Next Challenge:

• Build industry-leading NLP/NLU models to accelerate our international growth, using our search queries, images, metadata, and/or customer interactions to significantly improve our customers’ image/video search and discovery experiences, globally in 20+ regions and 20+ languages
• Partner closely with data scientists, product, machine learning engineers, engineers, user researchers, and designers to implement models aligned to customer needs and deploy to production
• Develop our technical strategy and roadmap alongside product, team members, and leadership. Distilling customer requirements into problem definitions, identifying solutions, and recommending measures of success. 
• Lead, guide and mentor team members in building best-in-class machine learning solutions

What You’ll Need:

• Proven expertise building and validating NLP/NLU models with deep learning as well as traditional methods for multiple languages. Areas of preferred expertise include: text embeddings (ex: BERT), disambiguation, and modifiers.
• A minimum of 5 years of hands-on technical experience in academia and industry 
• A strong understanding of the real-world advantages and drawbacks of various algorithms and the ability to measure success
• Ability to handle ambiguity, priorities, and competing objectives. Experience solving highly technical problems. 
• Hands-on experience with accessing data, Python, machine learning libraries, and deep learning libraries (ex: scikit-learn, numpy, pandas, scipy, TensorFlow, SQL, hive, spark, etc.) 
• Experience providing mentorship and guidance to team members. 
• Ability to write clean, understandable code that follows leading industry standards and practices and is well-documented, and to build easily reproducible models
• An ability to consider biases that exist in the data and develop solutions to mitigate biases appropriately 
• Outstanding communication skills. Ability to communicate at all levels, including explaining sophisticated technical solutions to non-experts
• Open listener, ability to be open to many diverse voices and perspectives
• Nice-to-have: Fluency in 2+ languages
• Nice-to-have: Background in linguistics
• Nice-to-have: Familiarity with computer vision techniques
• A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Linguistics, Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, Economics, Sociology, Natural Sciences, or any other equivalent quantitative field is preferred
