Position Summary

The Merchandise data science team focuses on delivering tools and products to support end-to-end merchandising operations, focusing on budget planning and trend forecasting. We also collaborate last mile inventory management with digital assets (search & browse) and markdown strategy. As an integral part of our merchandise data science team, the Data Scientist is responsible for collecting, analyzing and presenting data to improve decision making around merchandising operations. This Data Scientist should come with strong business logic and be able to investigates complex problems through expertise in disciplines within the fields of mathematics, statistics, and computer science and presents and communicates data insights/findings to Nordstrom Leadership and the business

A day in the life….

  • Partner with key stakeholders to define success and develop measurement frameworks

  • Dive deep into complex business problems and provide insights on merch activities

  • Collaborate with team members and business partners to deliver high quality solutions and recommendations to a variety of problems across digital and merch

  • Bring data to life through storytelling in a clear and meaningful way to audiences with mixed levels of technical expertise

  • Reconcile divergent demands from multiple stakeholders in a fast-paced work environment.

You own this if you have…

  • 1+ years applying business logic to extract and cleanse large datasets from structured and unstructured data sources

  • 1+ years of professional experience analyzing complex data, drawing conclusions, and making recommendations.

  • MS/PhD in mathematics, statistics, operations research, computer science preferred or equivalent experience

  • Track record of delivering end-to-end data science products or data analysis, i.e. ability to work across the product lifecycle from exploration and discovery to operationalization and production.

  • Deep Python skills including familiarity with pandas, scikit-learn, seaborn and matplotlib,etc. (what we use)

  • Experience with software development best practices including story estimation, test driven development, code review, and version control with git.

  • Comfort managing project complexity and making informed trade-offs to quickly escape rabbit holes and make on-time deliveries.

  • Aptitude for breaking down complex technical topics for audiences with mixed levels of technical expertise. In particular, translating technical concepts into business outcomes and recommendations is essential for success in this role.

  • Strong technical writer and documenter.
