As an integral part of the Operations Research/Supply Chain Analytics team, the data scientist role will focus on the area of Operations Research and Supply Chain Optimization. The ideal candidate is a creative and passionate problem-solver who thinks big, acts quickly, and is motivated to develop new approaches to optimize Nordstrom’s supply chain using quantitative and cutting-edge technology.

A day in the life:

  • Develop a deep understanding of Nordstrom’s business and inform how we can use operations research to solve problems in areas such as network design, S&OP, transportation optimization, inventory allocation, and reverse logistics.
  • Proactively identify high-value opportunities and influence stakeholders’ roadmaps.
  • Master complex data sources, function as a domain expert in operations research across all of Nordstrom’s business channels and functional areas, and collaborate with data partners to improve and expand the team’s access to internal data.
  • Lead efforts to develop and deploy robust end-to-end optimization products, i.e., work across the product lifecycle from research and discovery to operationalization and production.
  • Collaborate with and mentor teammates, learning from and sharing your expertise with them
  • Create resources and opportunities for learning and growth across our broader community of data scientists and data analysts

Basic Qualifications:

  • A graduate degree in a quantitative field such as Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or Statistics.
  • 7+ years hands-on experience using optimization software such as Gurobi, Cplex, or Xpress.
  • 7+ years hands-on experience with data modeling using SQL, Python, R, SparkSQL, etc.
  • 2+ years industrial experience in solving supply chain problems such as network planning, S&OP, transportation, inventory optimization, and forecasting.
  • Solid understanding of basic statistics modeling techniques such as regression, classification, decision trees, etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to explain complex technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years industrial experience in solving supply chain problems such as network planning, S&OP, transportation, inventory optimization, and forecasting.
  • Familiarity with machine learning algorithms such as clustering, classification, neural networks, collaborative filtering, survival analysis, etc.
  • Experience with cloud computing solutions such as AWS, Azure.
  • Knowledge of visualization tools such as Tableau, d3.js, Shiny.
  • Expertise in a computing language (Java/C++) and able to write production level data science code.
