Job Description

We are seeking a talented and motivated Research Scientist with a strong background in human data analysis, machine learning, and behavioral research. This role involves working on projects related to the safety, alignment, and evolution of large language models (LLMs). The ideal candidate will bring expertise in conducting cutting-edge research to ensure LLMs align with societal norms and user safety requirements.

Essential functions

  • Conduct research on optimizing Supervised Fine Tuning (SFT) and Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF) techniques for aligning LLMs with specific use cases.
  • Collaborate with technical and non-technical stakeholders to ensure LLMs align with business objectives and user needs.
  • Investigate methods to prevent harmful content generation and ensure LLM outputs adhere to safety and societal guidelines.
  • Develop scalable mechanisms for monitoring and controlling LLMs as they grow in size and complexity, ensuring consistent alignment with predefined goals.
  • Own and drive a research agenda, selecting high-impact projects that align with business priorities and deliver value.

Qualifications

  • PhD in any field (preferably Linguistics, Behavioral Psychology, Cognitive Science, or a related discipline).
  • Demonstrated experience with human/user data, quantitative analysis, and behavioral research.
  • Experience with machine learning techniques, particularly related to LLMs.
  • Strong understanding of human data collection methods (surveys, experiments) with emphasis on data quality and validity.
  • Strong foundation in machine learning, particularly in the context of LLM alignment techniques (SFT, RLHF).
  • Proficiency in Python or R for statistical programming and data analysis.
  • Experience with safety research, human behavior, or evolution-related studies.
  • Excellent communication skills for working with diverse internal and external teams.
