Job Summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center is hiring for Data Scientist III, Pathology Application Development: Maintain and develop annotation & reporting system; Develop and optimize bioinformatics pipelines for NGS data analysis (oncology and infectious disease); Stay updated on the latest tools and methodologies in the field.

Data Processing and Quality Control: Utilize bioinformatics tools to process raw NGS data and perform quality control checks; Ensure accuracy and reliability of sequencing data through thorough validation processes. Report Generation and Documentation: Generate comprehensive reports summarizing key findings from NGS analyses; Maintain detailed documentation of analysis pipelines and methodologies. Troubleshooting and Problem Solving: Identify and troubleshoot issues related to data quality, analysis pipelines, or software tools; Implement solutions to address challenges and optimize workflows. Data Security and Compliance: Ensure compliance with data protection and privacy regulations; Implement measures to secure sensitive genomic and clinical data. Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams: Collaborate with biologists, bioinformaticians, clinicians, and other stakeholders to understand research objectives and contribute data science expertise; Provide data-driven insights to guide experimental design and research strategies. Big Data Management: Manage and analyze large-scale NGS datasets efficiently using distributed computing frameworks; Implement data storage and retrieval strategies to handle diverse types of genomic data. Quality Assurance and Validation: Establish quality control measures for NGS data analysis pipelines and ensure the accuracy of results; Validate and benchmark analysis methods to ensure robustness and reproducibility. Bioinformatics Infrastructure: Contribute to the design and optimization of bioinformatics infrastructure, ensuring scalability and performance; Stay abreast of emerging technologies and tools in the NGS and data science fields. Continuous Learning and Professional Development: Stay informed about advancements in genomics, bioinformatics, and NGS technologies; Attend conferences, workshops, and training sessions to enhance skills. Communication and Collaboration: Effectively communicate complex bioinformatics concepts to non-experts; Collaborate with peers to contribute to the overall success of genomic research projects; Willingness to collaborate within a team environment and contribute to the overall success of genomic research projects .Project Management and Leadership: Manage timelines and deliverables for NGS data analysis projects; Prioritize tasks and allocate resources efficiently; Lead and manage NGS data science projects, including defining project goals, timelines, and resource allocation; Mentor and guide junior team members in data science methodologies.

Experience and Education

  • Ph.D. or M.S. in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, (Bio)mathematics, (Bio)statistics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field and four (4) years post-graduation experience in data analysis and/or scientific software development
  • S. with demonstrated experience in broadly defined areas of bioinformatics with six (6) years post-graduation experience in data analysis and/or scientific software development.

Job Duties

  • Analyzes and develops formalisms, algorithms and software for applications in biomedical research.
  • Develops and maintains software tools and infrastructure for resolving specific problems.
  • Oversees the development, testing and revision of programs in a team with diverse bioinformatics expertise.
  • Trains users and other personnel in analyzing, defining and resolving computational problems.
  • Other Duties: Performs other duties as assigned.
