We are looking for a machine learning engineer who will lead the effort to build and scale our next-generation recommendation engine for the Services marketplace. In this role, you’ll hone your skills in ML techniques like GBDT, ensemble models, and embeddings, while regularly pushing code to services running in production. As a member of the team, you will be part of a small and agile group that is responsible for the backend selection and ranking of businesses on Yelp.

What you'll do:

• Productionize and automate model pipelines within Python services.
• Develop and maintain reliable, scalable, and maintainable systems.
• Partner with the central ML platform team to ensure the team and group leverage Yelp's ML tools effectively and in accordance with best practices.
• Help shape the future of ML at Yelp by providing valuable feedback and contributing to tool improvements.
• Independently manage and lead software development projects.
• Act as a bridge between applied and data scientists who may not have experience building scalable systems, and generalist backend engineers who may lack experience with ML or other mathematical/statistical model-based systems.

What it takes to succeed:

• A proven track record of productionizing machine learning model-based solutions, ideally at a scale that is comparable to Yelp's.
• Expertise in Python (including pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, Tensorflow, Keras, XGBoost).
• Experience in Spark, cloud (AWS), and microservices (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Experience building ranking models, recommender systems / recommendation algorithms, or working in personalization or targeting.
• Ability to work independently and autonomously in a fast-paced environment.
• The curiosity to uncover promising solutions to new problems, and the persistence to carry your ideas through to an end goal.
