Job Description

As a Data Scientist Sr. in the Customer Testing Analytics team, you will be an experimenter, leveraging Starbucks data to design and measure large-scale customer-level experiments and in-market tests to determine the business impact from our most strategic initiatives. In this broad & dynamic role, you will develop and leverage statistical modeling tools, techniques, and datasets to identify causal drivers of business impact. Your analysis will directly inform broader rollout strategies for our customer and retail digital programs.

As a testing analytics expert, you will…

  • Influence & support our largest strategic innovations – You will provide guidance & expertise to support business stakeholders in how to effectively measure & validate our most critical business investments; You will support the full scope of testing across the business, from ideation & exploratory data analysis all the way through measurement of sales & transaction lift for initiatives at scale.
  • Collaborate to develop cross-functional learning plans – You will partner with technology, operations, marketing, and external vendors to develop comprehensive learning plans, aligning program goals to specific & measurable partner, customer & business insights.
  • Deliver complex analytical projects – You will develop fit-for-purpose test vs. control models and other descriptive & inferential analytics to determine the causal impact to sales, transactions, margin, and/or loyalty from specific interventions and inform go/no-go decisions.
  • Lead data prep of complex datasets and ensure accurate experiment setup - You will be responsible for the extraction, manipulation, & synthesis of a wide variety of data sets such as customer, transactional and clickstream datasets; To ensure precise experimental setup, you will collaborate across functional boundaries and navigate the complexities of our technology stack & integrations with external vendors.
  • Craft compelling narratives backed by data - You will work under consultative or self-initiated direction to produce relevant visualizations & narratives to support testing recommendations; You will present these narratives both verbally & visually to varying levels of business stakeholders, up to and including senior leadership.
  • Lead and evangelize the experimental method – You will be a role model for experimental design & measurement, developing and spreading best practices across your business stakeholders.

We’d love to hear from people with:

  • Bachelor’s degree with quantitative emphasis. Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Science, Economics, Marketing Analytics, or related field.
  • Master’s Degree or PhD preferable.
  • 5+ years’ experience in data analytics or related field
  • Strong data querying skills (SQL) and advanced competency in R or Python
  • Experience processing data at scale via Spark (PySpark, SparkR, Scala, or Java) or various sources to generate business insights.
  • Proficiency with descriptive analysis and data visualization (ggplot2, seaborn, matplotlib, Tableau)
  • Strong knowledge of A/B testing and inferential statistics (sample size determination / power analysis, hypothesis testing, regression, etc.)
  • Some experience with event tagging for web and mobile applications, utilizing tools such as Google Analytics, mParticle, and similar platforms to collect and analyze clickstream data accurately.
  • Strong collaboration instincts – desire & ability to work with partners to achieve the best outcome for the business.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and storytelling skills. The role requires effective communication with colleagues, stakeholders, and leaders from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple, time-sensitive projects and competing priorities simultaneously to drive projects to completion with minimal guidance and high attention to details.
  • Familiarity with industry-standard A/B testing tools and technologies, such as Google Optimize, Optimizely, Apptimize etc., or APT/Mastercard Test & Learn software strongly preferred.
