The Global Center of Excellence (Global COE) in the Data, Analytics, Insights, and Business Operations (DAIBO) organization is a small team of curious and creative partners working with our international businesses to resolve some of our most difficult questions. This Lead Data Scientist role contributes to Starbucks’ success by delivering insights and recommendations derived from pricing, digital optimization, personalization, and store placement models. This includes planning the analysis, preparing data, analyzing data, identifying insights, crafting the narrative, and presenting our recommendations to our international partners and licensees. This role will be pivotal to advocating and influencing for the data products and platforms needed for our international stakeholders to make data-informed decisions.

In this role, you will help grow the Global Center of Excellence’s analytics and data science capabilities from initial, ad hoc analyses to progressively more automated analytical and data science approaches. You will collaborate with subject matter experts across DAIBO and Starbucks Technology to select the best paths forward for our international partners. You will explain highly technical analytics, results, and concepts to our stakeholders in actionable, approachable ways. You arrive with a sense of adventure, an interest in cross-cultural communication, and your technical expertise (advanced analytics, statistics, experimental design, and/or ML/AI).

Summary of Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Extracts data from various databases; performs exploratory data analysis, cleanses, massages, and aggregates data
  • Collaborates with a international stakeholders, Starbucks Technology partners, and DAIBO team members to identify opportunities for the Global COE to support international business development.
  • Leads innovative narrative development and presentation of insights to stakeholders
  • Develops processes to automate and scale insights operationalization
  • Develops, drives, and delivers multiple cross-departmental projects
  • Establishes the Global COE team as subject matter experts in advanced analytics
  • Provides leadership and mentoring to team members
  • Has multiple strategies for evangelizing analytics and data science to stakeholders.
  • Researches relevant empirical methods and quantitative tools
  • Possesses in-depth business knowledge in order to initiate and drive discussions with business partners to identify business issues needing analytics solutions

Qualifications

  • Education: MS+ concentration preferred with discipline in Stats, Math, Comp Sci, Engineering, Econ, Psychology, Quantitative Social Science or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years of experience in statistical modeling or quantitative analysis
  • Experience influencing cross-functional partners and working in a matrixed organization
  • Experience working with international stakeholders and vendors
  • Ability to apply knowledge of multidisciplinary business principles and practices to achieve successful outcomes in cross-functional projects and activities
  • Experience with one or more of the following analytics applications: pricing, digital optimization, personalization, and/or store placement analytics
  • Expert knowledge of statistics (descriptive, inferential, etc.), experimentation, and/or data science.
  • Proficiency with SQL, Python/R, and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI)
  • Ability to handle and maintain the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.
