Job Description

The Supervisor, Genomics & Biomarkers will deliver success to objectives that are aligned with current and future goals of the Genomics Testing Lab and Hackensack Meridian Health. The supervisor instructs and inspires the testing team to reach high performance in a complex clinical environment by stimulating collaborations across all clinical disciplines and partnering with both academic and industry sectors. With expertise in ‘omics’, biomarker discoveries, bioinformatics, tissue engineering, and up-to-date cutting-edge technologies, the supervisor identifies opportunities to translate new scientific opportunities in molecular testing into operations within the lab. The supervisor prioritizes all aims of the department and constructs portfolio strategies that associate with research and intellectual assets. The supervisor catalyzes key scientific methodologies to ensure high quality biospecimen research as appropriate. The supervisor supervises all administrative activities, including finance, budget and staff performance evaluation.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Supervisor, Genomics & Biomarkers at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  1. Supervises employees engaged in testing products to ensure that they meet proper specifications and guidelines.

    2. Develops and implements policies and procedures regarding product testing that adhere to organizational standards and budgets.

    3. Oversees product inspection, taking corrective action when necessary.

    4. Creates and maintains product testing records to evaluate and improve product quality as well as testing procedures.

    5. Conducts, reviews, interprets, and evaluates the results of various product quality tests.

    6. Completes assigned goals on time and within budget by actively managing finance, budget, social and organizational opportunities by collaborating with academic and industrial partners to foster commercialization efforts, ensures technological strength of the genomics and biomarker programs.

    7. Communicates effectively with senior leadership to build and establish optimal operation/workflow to improve research productivity.

    8. Demonstrates research progress and future plans with performance metrics.

  2. Cultivates collegial relationship and actively works with physicians and other clinicians by continuous monitoring and evaluating milestones and time lines for new test implementation and overall throughput of the lab.

    10. Coordinates high degree of interactions among staff and interdepartmental clinicians to promote progressive activities of interdisciplinary and integrative research environment for the network.

    11. Participates in project evaluation, business development, and negotiation.

    12. Provides scientific and technical input when needed to senior leadership and executives of the organization.

    13. Provides leadership as a thought-leader, builds track record of high quality results to referring physicians for baseline testing offerings as well as new tests that are rolled out to the market targeting new biomarkers for more precise diagnostics and the identification of new therapeutic options.

    14. Successfully ensures the quality control of biospecimens in a resource-limited environment, selects outsourcing vendors for specific laboratory goals, and rigorously evaluates all quality controls.

    15. Determines clearly communicated time lines and milestones for all bio specimen research in the department/laboratory.

    16. Develops strategies to become a key resource to lead and contribute to diverse groups of clinical and research teams in HMH.

    17. Promotes optimal use of the biobank to drive specimen bank growth to all constituents including employees, patients and current and future partners of the network.

    18. Manages and controls scheduling, audits for Good Laboratory Practice and ensures compliance to regulations and policies of HMH, including IRB, IACUC, IBC, human subjects protection, animal welfare, biosafety, conflict of interest and scientific misconduct as appropriate.

    19. Ensures that CLIA and CAP guidelines are always maintained.

    20. Provides scientific input at leadership meetings evaluates new technologies and recommends new service and testing ideas that will benefit HMH and the patients it serves.

    21. Expresses clear vision for intermediate and long-term goals to staff, generates and modifies safety and scientific policies to maintain excellent laboratory-wide behavior and conduct of scholarship.

    22. Develops capital requirements for equipments for the purpose of expansions and replacements and propose externally funded research.

    23. Assists senior leadership and facilitates scientific growth that reflects leadership’s vision for providing precision medicine related services to the market HMH services.

    24. Participates in personnel decisions related to hiring, performance, or disciplinary actions.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  1. Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology.

    2. Minimum of 5 years of experience (at least one of which is in molecular pathology methods) under a qualified section director.

    3. Molecular biology experience.

    4. Knowledge of the field's policies, procedures, and practices.

    5. Project management skills.

    6. Detail oriented.

    7. Strong computer skills related to bio-and clinical informatics and big-data mining, experience to work with IT experts, RNs, allied health professionals and physicians.

    8. Interpersonal and organizational skills.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  1. Minimum of 7 years of scientific experience in molecular and cell biology or gene.

    2. Minimum of 7 years of collaboration experiences with clinicians, oncologists, pathologists and research coordinators for precision medicine.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

  1. ASCP certification in Molecular Biology.
  2. Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS).
