As a member of the IT Management Team, you are responsible for managing, developing, and leading a team of employees. Your role includes leading the specific functional responsibilities of your team, which involves overseeing team performance and deliverables. However, your role as a leader within our organization requires more than the management of resources and day-to-day operations. As a steward of the company, you are charged with the development and execution of your team’s strategic vision and plan and ensuring that your team’s actions align with the larger goals of the company and the IT Division.

The Data Science Manager leads the Data Science CoE team of data scientists and analysts, this role will recruit, manage, mentor, and inspire data science team(s); managing performance, goals, and development potential. Cultivate professional development opportunities.

ROLE

  • ADMINISTRATION: Ensures proper department coverage (writing schedule and break aids if needed). Understands department budget, able to research and explain budget variances.
  • MANAGING PERFORMANCE: Coaches and mentors employees to provide support and guidance. Has regular open and honest conversations with employees to discuss work performance and career development. Identifies learning opportunities to strengthen employee knowledge, skill and ability.
  • COMMUNICATION: Regularly shares information with employees via meetings and one-on-one conversations. Successfully navigates difficult conversations with employees, members, and suppliers. Listens, expresses empathy and adapts to get points across. Addresses issues immediately to ensure a timely resolution and to avoid escalating the situation. Consistently demonstrates business knowledge during interactions with senior management.
  • SELF-MANAGEMENT: Demonstrates sound judgment, taking a partner when necessary. Ability to maintain self-control in the face of hostility or provocation or in intense, hectic situations.

  • Partners with engineering teams to influence enterprise-level data products, IT architecture, and engineering platform strategies to meet the needs of business and the data science solutions.
  • Helps shape data science capability by creating scalable, reusable, and customizable analytical components.
  • This is a full-time management/leadership position (45+ hours per week).

REQUIRED

  • 10 years’ experience in data, analytics, data science to support critical business needs.
  • 5+ years’ experience building and deploying scalable analytics and data science solutions.
  • Experience in defining and implementing data strategy for the companies and teams fulfill the transition to being data driven.
  • Experience partnering with business teams to architect and strategize technology and data roadmap.
  • Experience building and leading successful data science teams including mentorship and career development of both data engineers and analyst team members.
  • Proficiency in SQL, PySpark, Python, Machine Learning / Deep Learning.
  • Expertise with at least one data visualization tool, preference: PowerBI.
  • Experience with cloud data infrastructure and building things in a repeatable, scalable way in Databricks.
  • Extensive and/or in-depth knowledge of data science, machine learning, forecasting and optimization modeling, and algorithms.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to level the conversation to business audiences with different technical backgrounds and build strong relationships across departments.
  • Proven track record of active coaching and mentorship of leading teams to further their career and improve their skills.
  • Strong familiarity with the Agile development process and proven ability to prepare a project plan, communicate the plan to the team, and break the work down into trackable tasks.
  • HIPAA Training and Supervisors Orientation (within 30 days of hire); Leadership Development 101 (within one year); Costco Pay Policies (within 90 days of promotion).

Recommended

  • 10 years’ experience with a Bachelor's degree, 8 years’ experience with Masters, or 6 years’ experience with PhD.
  • Experience in retail - personalization, marketing, eCommerce, Supply Chain.
  • Statistical mindset and a strong curiosity about retail business processes and data.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong ability to tell a story with data and visualizations.
  • Experience deploying and maintaining machine learning models in a cloud environment, using containers, data bricks is a plus.

Pay Range: $135,000 - $200,000, Bonus and Restricted Stock Unit (RSU) eligible
