Job Summary

Farmers Insurance Exchange (Woodland Hills, CA) seeks a Data Scientist I to contribute to the development and implementation of predictive analytics through the application of advanced statistical and analytical techniques to deliver data driven insights supporting business objectives. Specific duties include: use appropriate modeling techniques to address business needs; build supervised machine learning models to help solve business problems and enhance Claims efficiencies; apply various model algorithms to fit the predictive model; perform appropriate evaluation of model performance; perform open-ended exploration of new data sources; model specific metrics to evaluate performance; retrieve the needed data, appropriately partition the data into training and test sets for unbiased estimate of model performance; review programs to ensure they conform to quality standards; support preparation of internal/external, structured/unstructured data sets to build/rebuild/refresh predictive models; build customized queries to extract data from Farmers systems; investigate and understand data from external sources; use computing languages to process and transform the data into features that can be fed to commonly implemented methods in data science; communicate models to other modelers; communicate model results to business stakeholders; contribute to the continuous improvement of the modeling process; and share the learnings from the projects within the data science team to improve overall team knowledge and standards. Option to work remotely is available.

Position requires a Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Statistics, Applies Statistics, or a closely related field of study, plus 2 years of experience in the job offered, or similar data management or data analyst position. Must have 2 years of experience with each of the following: working with complex datasets requiring the ability to infer the business context and design structure of datasets with minimal provided supporting documentation; communicating data insights to stakeholders to provide business value through analytics; communicating observed potential data anomalies to IT or technical audience to support defect resolutions; querying relational databases with SQL involving subqueries, window functions, and an emphasis on query performance optimization; coding in a scripting/programming language such as Python, R, or SAS for data analysis or modeling work; and creating Excel workbooks where the formulas include a variety of lookup based functions. Option to work remotely is available.
