Manager of Data Engineering is a critical role for building the right data foundation and ensuring that data engineering solutions and team can rapidly scale and adjust based on business priorities. In this role, you will be responsible for leading a team of data engineers to define, design and deliver a variety of data products for critical business operations, sales strategy, data scientists, logistics and other data consumers.

This role will need you to do strategic planning, stakeholder management, define roadmap and vision to drive engineering excellence along with growing and motivating your associates. You will also produce documentation, presentations for stakeholders/leadership, and lead training sessions for data. You will also be working and partnering with 3rd party vendors to facilitate data-sharing agreements and managing consulting partners.

What you will do – Essential Responsibilities

Team Management

  • Responsible for interviewing, selecting and training associates
  • Must effectively resolve associate matters
  • Responsible for day-to-day tactical team decisions
  • Required to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
  • Accountable for team’s use and adherence to the CarMax® methodology
  • Create/maintain team staffing and scheduling, to include time tracking
  • Demonstrated ability to schedule and execute hardware and software releases
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and assign tactical requests to the team

Associate Development

  • Responsible for associate development to include providing courageous leadership, motivation to improve team dynamics, mentorship in order to assist the growth of team members and constructive feedback on associate’s work
  • Responsible for frequent associate File Reviews
  • Effectively provide associate feedback through regular objective reviews and by writing and delivering Annual Performance Reviews
  • Working with associates to collaboratively establish an Individual Development Plan and review them on a timely basis
  • Track associate performance and provide them with appropriate feedback

Leadership

  • Leads team through obstacles and time constraints to overcome barriers and successfully deliver results
  • Influences the work of others to drive department goals and initiatives to successful completion through effective team and project management, customer interaction and IT coordination

Production Support

  • Provides technical experience related to the position
  • Ensures that support problems and errors are tracked to ensure appropriate future handling
  • Lead incident reporting to include postmortems which involves prioritizing enhancements to reduce ongoing support; scheduling support rotations; ensuring that the ticket queues are appropriately managed; and assisting with critical outages at any time

Design and Review

  • Active participant in project design meetings providing vision and guidance
  • Applies technical knowledge in specialty areas for position

Customer Interaction / Business Knowledge

  • Act as the key liaison with the customer community and consistently builds positive relationships with customers and contacts in supported business areas
  • Interact with the customer including understanding of requirements and proposed solutions
  • Must courageously influence the processes and barriers to projects in order to best represent the customers’ requirements and needs
  • Must continually seeks opportunities to increase internal customer satisfaction and deepen client relations

Technical Qualifications:

  • 5+ years' experience in Data Engineering of highly scalable data platforms/ecosystems.
  • 3+ years’ experience in building and managing data platforms/ecosystems.
  • 3+ years’ experience in Cloud Engineering, with knowledge in distributed computing preferred
  • Demonstrated innate passion for the Data Engineering and Data Governance, building scalable data platforms/ecosystems
  • Possess an in-depth knowledge and stays current with industry trends in: Cloud data solutions, data engineering, data platforms and analytics
  • Formulate a technology plan for EDL/EDW area based on in-depth understanding of the current needs of technology, the future direction of CarMax technology, and the road map of data and analytics technology
  • Direct teams in the definition, direction and maintenance of the data platform and solutions to ensure that the critical business insights and end analyst(s) needs are consistently met
  • Conducts and participates in the review, evaluation, and recommendation of software products, productivity tools, and external services
  • Directs the development of data engineering standards, procedures, and processes. Ensure that the program and strategy is implemented, and its requirements fully met by technical and operational teams

Management Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in Technology leadership, with 3+ years managing direct reports architecting, building, and deploying data engineering solutions and platforms
  • Experience with data and analytics technologies, ETL, big data processing, reporting and CI/CD solutions/methodology
  • 1 to 3+ years of experience in cloud computing, migrating, and building new data solutions using cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP, Snowflake/Databricks)
  • 1 to 3+ years of experience in Agile/Scrum ways of working and delivering high-quality end solutions to stakeholders
  • Demonstrated leadership skills – can apply clear direction and priorities to teams
  • Serves as an empowering coach to the team by providing them with the resources, training, feedback, and a sounding-board to be successful in their roles balancing technical debt with speed-to-delivery customer focused team,
  • Promotes a customer-focused team, balancing technical debt with speed-to-delivery
  • Demonstrated ability to provide vision for the Data Engineering space and inspire teams towards the future
  • Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Engineering, or Data Science; Master’s preferred

Work Authorization: Candidates must be legally authorized to work for any U.S. employer on a full-time basis. Sponsorship will be considered for this specific role

Work Location And Arrangement: This role will be based out of the Plano, TX or Richmond, VA CarMax Technology Innovation Center and have a Hybrid work arrangement
