About the team

The team you will join is autonomous and composed of people with different backgrounds, including backend, cloud, and robotics. The team works in an Agile environment and is responsible for enabling the Five Platform to meet the scale and reliability our customers expect. We do this by designing, implementing, and maintaining the frameworks used for the development, deployment, and operation of the services that make up our great product. We aim to accelerate development teams by providing them with the tools to develop and maintain state-of-the-art cloud-native products. We believe in adopting Site Reliability Engineering and other industry best practices in a way that makes sense for our organisation.

What you will do

As an engineer on our SaaS platform, day to day, you'll be expected to define, design, implement, and integrate significant features. You’ll work alone, with other members of the team, and with people from across the engineering organisation. You'll investigate and solve complex system issues and bugs. You'll provide code and design reviews for other team members. You'll contribute to maintaining high technical standards concerning, for example, overall architecture and design patterns, CI/CD systems, coding and testing standards, observability and reliability, etc. You'll work collaboratively with other teams across the company to coordinate development efforts and best practices.

You don’t need to be familiar with all of the technologies we work with, but you should be enthusiastic to learn and to help us stay in the state-of-the-art envelope. Typical services we work with are written with Python / FastAPI, are deployed to our Kubernetes cluster through Gitlab CI using Terraform, use AWS services such as RDS for persistence, and have tooling for observability using technologies like Prometheus and OpenTelemetry. You’ll have the opportunity to learn from other engineers and to share your knowledge within the team and with the whole organisation through the Engineering, Architecture, and Infrastructure guilds.

About you

We have a long list of skills and experience mentioned here, however, just like software, we don’t need all the features at the beginning. Our ideal candidate will have some of these skills and the enthusiasm and energy to learn others.

• You're familiar with the challenges of building and operating distributed systems, such as scalability, availability, and observability.
• You are comfortable building and testing in modern Python or similar.
• You have a wealth of industry experience with a good mix of backend software engineering work and cloud infrastructure and architecture experience. You may have been called a Platform Engineer, DevOps Engineer, Cloud Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer, or Site Reliability Engineer previously, but are equally happy in both domains.
• You have experience with containerized application development and deployment.
• You know your way around CI/CD tools and the practice of building and maintaining deployment pipelines.
• You have experience with cloud services and Infrastructure as Code
• You’re comfortable with and have a grounding in DevOps/SRE principles and practices.
