Job Description

The Returns Platform Senior Product Manager will lead the discovery, definition, and roadmap planning for our global compliance product tool chain. Your primary customers are Lodging customers and the Avalara Global Returns and Payment Services team. The tools you help define and plan will drive high levels of automation and efficiency, enabling the global growth and scale of Avalara's core tax compliance offerings.

We’re opening this role to candidates located in commuting distance from our Durham, NC office as this will be a hybrid role.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the delivery of products, including PoC, internal Beta, internal launch, and ongoing releases. 
  • Participate actively in product planning and roadmap definition. 
  • Proactively work with internal and external customers to acquire a deep understanding of their requirements & business needs.
  • Research and write detailed product requirements including but not limited to user stories for engineering to execute against. 
  • Deliver requirements in partnership with Design/UX, as appropriate, with an iterative, pragmatic approach to research delivery. 
  • Ensure that product requirements incorporate effective written and more creative, visual techniques (e.g. wireframes and mockups). 
  • Research and document the customer journey(s)
  • Develop and articulate a defensible point of views based on data from primary and secondary researching including direct customer engagement, particularly for new feature or product launches.
  • Ensure committed product delivery timelines are achieved across the organization including but not limited to engineering. 
  • Define and analyze metrics that inform the success of products.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key decision-makers across the organization.

Qualifications

  • Must have 4+ years experience as a product manager or product owner working on multiple products with different challenges and opportunities 
  • Well versed in agile methodologies and tools - including Confluence, Jira, Slack - and experience working in an agile/scrum environment. 
  • You have experience with writing detailed requirements. 
  • You have experience with process mapping and conducting time studies.
  • Experience working for leading SaaS companies with a diverse customer base spanning small business owners, SMB, and enterprise 
  • Experience gained within similar vertical – FinTech / FS, Tax, E-Commerce or Accounting.
  • Experience with technical delivery teams leveraging continuous delivery for launch. 
  • Adept at developing and delivering complex products at high velocity and with aggressive deadlines. 
  • Strong analytical approach, with attention to detail and excellent reporting skills. 
  • Ability to communicate and manage stakeholder relationships effectively, internally and externally. 
  • Exceptional organizational and planning skills. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Lodging customers desirable
  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field (accounting, business, data science, or computer science); MBA desirable 
  • Experience working on SaaS products with customer bases that span small business owners, SMB, and enterprise 
  • Hands-on experience using major analytics and data tools; experience with SQL is a plus 
  • Have worked on products at multiple lifecycle stages, and with different kinds of challenges and opportunities
