Job Description

  • The Data Science Support provides statistical and data science support, with an emphasis on work that can be published or presented as scholarly work.
  • This support may include assistance with statistical analysis, research design, the use of computer-based analysis platforms, languages and tools, and interfacing with data sources.
  • The Data Science Support also promotes the use of data science resources available at and through the University.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Consult with UTA faculty, staff, faculty-sponsored graduate students, and affiliates concerning their research and scholarly activity, providing assistance with:

  • Basic statistical consulting such as: descriptive statistics, summarizing data, comparing groups, analyzing distributions, testing hypotheses with continuous distributions, single and multiple regression, ANOVA.
  • Data preparation and data interfaces.
  • Implementing platform- and software-specific workflows and programs.

Promote the use of data science resources available at and through the University:

  • Maintain awareness of available data science resources, such as those available through internal and external partnerships, trainings, and grants.
  • Assist with the development and presentation of audience-specific training / learning modules in data and statistical science.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline with experience in quantitative or qualitative data analysis, with knowledge of the principles of descriptive and inferential statistics.
  • Proficiency with at least one statistical software platform. Professional experience in or academic preparation for the role of statistician or data scientist.
  • Knowledge of the following statistical methods: Regression, ANOVA, Multivariate Analysis. Ability to perform job duties independently with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and make sound decisions, especially in a scholarly/academic context.
  • Ability to adhere to UTA’s standards of academic integrity.
  • Ability to function as a part of a diverse cross-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to work proactively, creatively, and with flexibility. Ability to apply resources such as technical documentation, training, vendor support and peer support in the performance of job duties and assignments.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow high-level policies and guidelines and apply those guidelines to daily responsibilities.
  • Ability to maintain currency of relevant job knowledge, including technical knowledge.
  • Ability to interact and communicate appropriately with clients in a professional and solution-focused manner with limited direction.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with others.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in data science or statistics with a focus in quantitative or qualitative data analysis, with knowledge of the principles of descriptive and inferential statistics.
  • Experience as a consultant or other one-on-one support role. Proficiency with one or more statistical software platforms such as R, SPSS, SAS or STATA.
  • Experience with the design of surveys in the scholarly context and the use of survey platforms. Experience with data visualization methods, platforms and tools Experience with databases and database interfaces including SQL.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python and its data science libraries.
  • Working knowledge of Linux. Any work experience or an internship as a statistician or data scientist.
