Job Summary

The Tsui Informatics Laboratory at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is seeking a Data Scientist to support the lab’s mission: to develop and deploy clinical decision support systems and research tools aimed to improve health care, address clinical challenges, and advance research. The Data Scientist will be able to conduct independent research focusing on the development of (deep) natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) applied to clinical notes, electronical health record, and/or literature.

In this role, the Data Scientist will work closely with the lab director, Dr. Rich Tsui to work on projects such as Expertise Knowledge System (EKP), social determinants of health (SDOH), and mental health. The Data Scientist will also actively develop new deep learning-based algorithms and work with CHOP researchers to advance current state-of-the-art research.

Job Responsibilities

  • Implement computational algorithms and experiments for test and evaluation; interprets data to assess algorithm performance. 
  • Develop high-quality code implementing models and algorithms as application programming interfaces or other service-oriented software implementations.
  • Participate in communication of research methods, implementation, and results to varied audience of clinicians, scientists, analysts, and programmers.
  • Work closely with applications research group to translate models and algorithms into engineered production applications.
  • Contribute to manuscript writing for results publication, authors abstracts, and presents at professional conferences.
  • Contribute to experiments and summaries for grant proposal preparation

  • Partner with key stakeholders and lead analysis to support research development and needs
  • Leverage data to drive decisions and introduce automation, predictability & optimization to allow us to operate efficiently and reliably at scale. 
  • Identify research problems and solve them by using various analytics, ML algorithms, data mining techniques, and medical informatics
  • Design and develop advanced mathematical, optimization models and apply them to define strategic and tactical needs and drive the appropriate business and technical solutions in the areas of information retrieval and predictive analytics
  • Research prototype and experiment with models by using programming languages such as Python, Java, R; participate in the production level deployment.
  • Create, enhance, and maintain technical documentation.
  • Influence clinical care or research practice
  • Partner in onboarding new technologies onto team's toolbox.

Job Responsibilities (Continued)

The lab/department works approximately 80% remotely, 20% on-site and/or on an as needed basis to achieve lab goals and fulfill job responsibilities.

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Bachelors in Analytics, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or a related field.

Required Experience: At least three (3) years of experience with progressively more complex data science, applied statistics, machine learning, or mathematical modeling projects.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Education: M.S. or PhD in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Analytics, Medical Informatics, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field.

Preferred Experience:

  • Four (4) years of experience with progressively more complex natural language processing, biomedical data science, machine learning, or applied statistics projects.
  • Medical informatics training or experience

Additional Technical Requirements

  • Fluent in open-source machine learning platforms (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, Scikit-Learn, NLTK, Spacy, etc.)
  • Knowledge and Experience with deep learning models, e.g., BERT, ClinicalBERT, CNN, LSTM, etc.
  • Fluent in topic modeling, named entity recognition, sentiment analysis, and information retrieval
  • Experience with relational databases (e.g., Postgres) strongly preferred
  • Knowledge and experience with Github, Bitbucket, or equivalent versioning system
  • Familiarity cloud systems, e.g., Amazon Web Services.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Experience creating informative visualizations for complex, high dimensional data preferred.
