About The Role

The Inventory Data Science Team at Gap Inc. applies advanced machine learning techniques to drive business benefits for Gap Inc. and its brands. The team’s focus is on creating data science capabilities to support Inventory Management function at Gap Inc. The team’s focus is in creating machine learning capabilities that match supply and demand in order to support inventory management at Gap Inc. Areas of knowledge include: demand forecasting, inventory replenishment, pricing, assortment, inventory and supply chain optimization, product testing, monte carlo simulation and sizing. You will support the team to build and deploy machine learning capabilities at scale, in partnership with GapTech, PDM, Central Marketing & business partners across our brands.

What You'll Do

  • Build, validate, and maintain Machine Learning and/or Operations Research models that support the buying, pricing or movement of inventory, assortment and build models that can detect supply chain defects and explain variance to the optimal state
  • Research new ways to improve predictive & explanatory models, will design quantitative systems, forecasting models, inventory models and solve real world problems using the latest machine learning techniques
  • Work with large quantities of data in scripting languages, compile and analyze data from different sources to check completeness and filtering criteria as needed for data science initiatives
  • Synthesize findings, prepare presentations and assist in presenting findings to all levels of management
  • Provide framework/methodology for measurement and feedback mechanism for models
  • Collaborate within the team and outside the team to solve complex problems
  • Continuously research and work to integrate emerging methodology, technology, coding and version control practices that best fits the team and practice, create effective documentation.

Who You Are

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D in a quantitative discipline such as Statistics, Mathematics, Operations research, Industrial Engineering or Data Science,
  • 1+ years of experience working as a data scientist or a similar role involving data extraction, analysis, statistical modeling, and communication in the inventory management space
  • 1+ years of experience in solving inventory management problems using optimization and/or AI/ML such as inventory optimization, time-series modeling, stochastic (inventory) modeling, Monte Carlo simulation, heuristic optimization and mathematical programming
  • Advanced proficiency in Python, Spark, Hive (or other MR), and common scripting languages for E2E pipeline Advanced proficiency using SQL for efficient manipulation of large datasets in on prem and cloud distributed computing environments, such as Azure environments
  • Experience with ML and classical predictive techniques such as logistic regression, decision trees, non linear regressions, ANN/CNN, boosted trees, SVM, Tensorflow, visualization packages, and a track record for creating business impact with these methods
  • Ability to work both at a detailed level as well as to summarize findings and extrapolate knowledge to make strong recommendations for change
  • Ability to collaborate with cross functional teams and influence product and analytics roadmap, with a demonstrated proficiency in relationship building
  • Ability to assess relatively complex situations and analyze data to make judgments and recommend solutions

This role is based out of the San Francisco office. Currently, job duties are being performed remotely. However, the Company may in the future require you/this role to be in the office on a full-time or part-time basis.
