About the Role...

Valo?is looking for an experienced?Staff Data Scientist in statistical genetics to create, develop, and validate methods that will change the way patients receive the best treatment. You will work in a multidisciplinary environment comprising data scientists, machine learning scientists, software engineers, and therapeutics & clinical development experts using unique and diverse human-centric datasets to solve challenging problems at the interface of scientific discovery, methodology, technology, and software. We are looking for data scientists who can match scientific breadth with technical excellence.

You will be responsible for designing and prototyping complex methods and workflows used to discover and develop drug treatments using genomics and clinical information. You will also help establish proof points for the validity of the methods created and contribute to the associated analytical work performed on rich proprietary human-centric datasets.

Your first goal will be to help design and build our next generation of state-of-the-art tools in genomics, epidemiology, and statistical genetics.

What You’ll Do…

  • Understand how scientific questions can be decomposed into analysis, visualization, and machine learning steps that provide answers or results that subject matter experts can turn into hypotheses.
  • Design and implement as prototype analysis or machine learning model solutions that use molecular and phenotypical human data.
  • Translate analysis and machine learning experiments into prototype software tools that can be used by other data scientists.
  • Collaborate with drug discovery and clinical experts to understand how to create impact.
  • Work along with other data scientists and software engineers to build methods, tools, and systems that have the right level of generalizability.

What You Bring…

  • PhD in quantitative science with demonstrated experience in computational biology, epidemiology, or healthcare
  • 7+ years of experience (including relevant graduate work) in role/domain or equivalent?
  • Experience in statistical genetics, probabilistic graphical modeling, or causal inference.
  • Experience in performing and working with results of genetically anchored studies such as GWAS, (omic)QTL, LoF, PRS, TWAS etc.
  • Experience with applied statistics, exploratory data analysis, machine learning, and data visualization, and with a demonstrated business or scientific impact when applying them
  • Proficient in Python or R programming, and at least basic knowledge of the other
  • Experience working with version control (e.g., git), writing tests (e.g., using pytest or testthat), and code reviews

  • Experience with working with personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI) data, or HIPAA compliance
  • Experience developing or maintaining a Python or R package
  • Experience working in data science environments on a cloud
