Job Description

Target is an iconic brand, a Fortune 50 company and one of America’s leading retailers.

Behind this iconic brand is a uniquely capable and brilliant team of data scientists, user experience designers, engineers and product owners. The Target Data Sciences UX Team (part of the broader Enterprise UX Team) plays a pivotal role in bringing incredible experiences to life that weren’t possible yesterday—generating new revenue sources for Target in the process. This team’s goal is to accelerate omni-channel A/B testing to fuel the continuous innovation that we believe is key to exceeding both guest & team member expectations in our stores and digital channels.

Great designers choose to work with us because we are interested in the value you will bring tomorrow as well as today and are dedicated to helping you get there.

We do this by providing:

  • Autonomy to do your job, experiment, and learn
  • Challenging work and the opportunity to make a huge impact on how a Fortune 50 company makes business decisions
  • Leaders who understand the importance of user-driven design
  • An incredible internal community of designers, researchers, writers, & accessibility consultants who rely upon & support each other in delivering exceptional user outcomes
  • An extremely inclusive & supportive culture built around “caring, growing, and winning together”

About the role:

You will be an integral part of the core cross-functional team responsible for research, design, & implementation of Target’s testing platform. You’ll play a critical role in setting UX standards, contributing to our long-term vision of a more integrated Data Science platform, and provide the guidance to make Data Science teams more user-centered.

UX is new to this space, so we’re looking for someone with experience in inclusive design, creating shared understanding among diverse team members, visual design & research expertise, and a solid understanding of business strategy. Your ability to help your team focus on problem-based outcomes rather than output will be essential to your success.

About you:

You are a talented product designer with an inclusive design mentality, create shared understanding among diverse team members, have visual design & research expertise and a solid understanding of business strategy. Your ability to help your team focus on problem-based outcomes rather than output will be essential to your success.

We need people who:

  • Fall in love with the problem, not any specific solution
  • View design as a collaborative effort and are open to solutions regardless of its source
  • Care about the success of both customers & users—and knows the difference
  • Have an always-learning mentality, challenge conventional wisdom, and ask “why”
  • Are comfortable with ambiguity and have a bias towards action and user research
  • Love a challenge, have an entrepreneurial spirit, and are motivated—rather than discouraged — by evangelizing UX and influencing team & company culture
  • Thrive in a culture of “Radical Candor” and are skilled at seeking & providing candid feedback while also caring personally about those they work with
  • Respect all coworkers and customers as people with needs & wants as valid as their own, and seek to empathize, understand, and improve their lives

Comparable experience we are looking for:

  • At least 2 enterprise or B2B software products designed & shipped (end to end) in a cross-functional, user-centered, & Agile environment
  • Demonstrable strengths in strategy, visual design, & UI specification
  • Experience evangelizing UX best practices, leading by example, building relationships with team members / stakeholders, and catering your design process accordingly
  • Experience with multiple generative and evaluative User Research techniques and knowledge of when to use (and not use) each one
  • An understanding of business and ability to rally teams around a shared outcome-focused vision
  • Experience using both qualitative and quantitative data to inform your designs and use IN your designs to ensure your solutions are indicative of real-world use cases
  • An unwavering passion for US Metrics, and a knowledge of the difference between reporting metrics & persuasive UX metrics
