Etsy is hiring a Senior Software Engineer II to join the Perso Engine Scale squad, a platform team that supports all recommendation systems at Etsy. Our team improves the impact of Perso Engine’s capabilities and takeaways by making them accessible and easily leveraged. We provide paved paths for customers to explore PE datasets and models, experiment with these capabilities more quickly, and develop new experiences powered by personalization. We are a multi-functional group of engineers, product managers, and we work closely with Applied Machine Learning (ML) Scientists working on innovative foundational tools and software that accelerate model prototyping, scale up access to data, and create flexible solutions that increase the velocity of our applied scientists.

This is a full-time position working with the Software Engineering Manager, Scalable Platform. This role requires your presence in Etsy’s Mexico City office once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. • Build sophisticated solutions: Engineer and deploy robust systems that deliver the most relevant and personalized content to millions of users, helping them achieve their shopping goals.

• Prototype, optimize, and productionize: Design, build, and iterate on large-scale product improvements that drive key results for Etsy and its users.

• Contribute across the stack: Work across the entire Recommendations stack, from application interfaces to the serving layer, contributing to all aspects of our recommendation system.

• Enable Applied Scientists: Develop intuitive interfaces and tools that empower our Applied Scientists to seamlessly monitor and analyze the performance of our recommendation systems across all modules.

• Collaborate multi-functionally: Partner with product engineering, machine learning infrastructure, data analysts, and other teams, participating in design reviews, prioritization, and implementation.

• Provide technical guidance: Offer detailed and constructive feedback during design and code reviews, ensuring high quality and maintainability across the team.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

• Have solid software engineering and coding skills, including CS fundamentals like data structures and algorithms.

• Have extensive professional experience with objective-oriented programming languages like Scala, Java, Python, etc.

• Have some familiarity with or are excited to learn about PHP and functional programming in Scala.

• Have experience building large-scale, low-latency distributed systems.

• Are comfortable collaborating with Machine Learning Scientists, Product Managers, Data Analysts, and Designers to ensure that you deliver impactful product features.

• Are an analytical thinker and understand how to wield data to make informed decisions about your work.

• Turn ideas into deeply reliable and well-tested code with an eye towards maintainability.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

• Being an advocate for end-users.

• Experience building production recommendations, search, advertising, or general e-commerce systems.
