The Scientific Senior Principal Data Scientist for Telematics will lead the technical program within Data & Analytics to build out world-class telematics capabilities within General Motors Insurance (GMIC) for all functions including marketing, pricing, and claims. The role is responsible for partnering with leaders across GMIC to understand the demands on telematics capabilities and help them understand what is possible and feasible. This role will set a technical strategy for bringing in telematics data from GM and other sources, processing this data into a broad class of attributes useful to GMIC, building telematics modeling files that connect to insurance and other data domains, and building and deploying ML models that generate deep insight into insurance operations across functions. This role will also manage external research partnerships to close knowledge gaps and accelerate R&D efforts.

Responsibilities

About the role:

  • Partner with Product and D&A leadership to ensure we understand and document telematics needs
  • Develop the technical strategy for acquiring and leveraging telematics data across GMIC use cases

Lead technical efforts and make deep technical contributions to our ability to:

  • Acquire telematics data from GM and other sources
  • Create a data quality regime that gives deep observability into telematics data fitness
  • Run signal processing, sensor fusion, and other techniques to clean and enhance data
  • Process telematics data into a broad class of meaningful attributes useful to GMIC
  • Build out telematics modeling files for marketing, pricing, claims and other domains
  • Develop data science and machine learning models that generate deep insights
  • Partner with ML engineers to create a deployment regime that enables modern ML ops
  • Create first-class documentation of telematics processes that create transparency across GMIC
  • Manage external research partnerships on telematics to close knowledge gaps and accelerate R&D
  • Create scientific code libraries that enable efficiency in onboarding and working with telematics data
  • Influence the data model and data architecture for the telematics domain
  • Partner with Data Governance to ensure telematics data is properly cataloged and managed
  • Influence vehicle data collection from GM vehicles and how it shares the data and processes insights

Qualifications

What makes you an ideal candidate:

  • Expert knowledge of data storage, data science, machine learning, and related disciplines
  • Expert knowledge of telematics, sensor collection, sensor fusion, signal processing
  • Knowledge of using telematics for insurance is preferred
  • Ability to elicit requirements from stakeholders, design high-level solutions to address business or technical issues, and guide implementation to completion
  • Exposure to cloud data platforms such as Azure or AWS

Education

Master’s Degree in relevant field of study required

Experience

  • 12+ years in data science related function(s) required
  • 7+ years in telematics data science preferred
  • 1+ years in using telematics for insurance preferred
  • 5-7 years leading through mentorship in related field, driving thought leadership and innovation required

Licenses

  • Related certifications and/or licenses required
  • Member of and recommendation by accredited association in related field preferred
  • Related publications preferred

Salary

The base salary range for this role is: USD $95,000.00 to $280,000.00.

At GM Financial, we strive for transparency in all aspects of our business, including pay equity. This is the GM Financial pay range for this role and job level. The exact salary and compensation will vary based on factors like knowledge, skills, experience, and education.

This role is eligible to participate in a performance-based incentive plan. Full time employees are eligible to participate in health benefits on day one of employment.
