About this role

As a Senior Data Scientist on the Globalization team, you will build scalable search algorithms fueled by machine learning, natural language processing and data-driven processes. You will collaborate with other Data Scientists, Product Managers and engineers to improve Udemy’s search product. We have an exciting road map ahead of us and this is a unique opportunity to build robust and powerful search systems at scale.

What you'll be doing

  • You will develop innovative approaches to build data products, implement fast prototypes and production-grade data pipelines to power ML-based data products.
  • You will build offline evaluation strategies and curate datasets to benchmark multi-lingual search use-cases.
  • You will maintain and monitor complex data pipelines.
  • You will form product hypotheses, implement metrics and design A/B experiments to quantitatively measure product success.
  • You will stay at the cutting edge of advancements in data science, NLP, LLMs, machine learning, and prompt engineering.
  • You will communicate project status to non-technical stakeholders.
  • You will guide and inspire junior data scientists and engineers, shaping the future of our department and fostering a culture of continuous innovation and learning.

What you’ll have

  • 5+ years of full-time experience with machine learning, data science or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of statistics, machine learning, and natural language processing and hands-on experience in a variety of fundamental methods like regression, classification, clustering using libraries like scikit-learn, LightGBM etc.
  • A solid understanding of analytics, statistics, and probability. This includes familiarity with statistical tests, distributions, and data analysis techniques and effectively interpreting and communicating statistical information.
  • Proficiency with SQL and 1+ programming languages (e.g. Python).

Nice to haves

  • Experience with information retrieval tools such as Elasticsearch or Solr.
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, HuggingFace).
  • Experience building products using LLMs. Knowledge of prompting techniques, prompt-tuning, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG).
  • Experience with vector search libraries or databases.
  • Experience with big data storage and processing frameworks such as Hadoop, Hive, and Spark.
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform is advantageous.
  • Experience with visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI.
