Job Description

Role Summary

Nithio seeks a Data Engineering Intern to support our global team in driving innovation and progress in climate finance and energy access. As a Data Engineering Intern, you will have a strong quantitative background, experience with Python, and an entrepreneurial, inventive, experiment-driven mindset. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in geospatial analysis and relevant sector expertise (energy, credit assessments, etc.). You’ll be joining a growing, mission-driven company with a solid commitment to positive social impact.

The Data Engineering Intern will report to our Data Engineer (in the US ET time zone & the candidate will need to be able to be online & able to collaborate in this time zone). This intern position can be based remotely from North America, Kenya, Nigeria, or Uganda. This will be a part-time commitment: 20-30 hours per week.

Primary Responsibilities

• Support the data team in designing tools and data infrastructure to analyze large volumes of data and increase automation.
• Make data accessible: Document pipelines and processes clearly and support other team members in understanding and using data workflows and outputs.
• Measure, learn, repeat: Track KPIs for data ingestion and processing and identify approaches to improve performance, mitigate risks, and align on business goals.
• Help identify and onboard new data sets that feed into Nithio’s analytical and software products through APIs and integrationsApply testing and validation techniques to ensure data processes and pipelines are working properly and make recommendations to improve efficiency, reliability, and quality
• Effectively communicate complexity: Synthesize, visualize, and communicate results to internal and external stakeholders through dashboards, plots, presentations, and reports.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in or recently completed a Master’s program in a related field.
• Experience using SQL, Python, R, or other query and scripting languages to aggregate and transform data and connect platforms
• Experience with cloud computing platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, or Microsoft Azure is a plus
• Exposure to data warehousing or data lake infrastructure such as Databricks or SnowflakeFamiliarity with ETL / ELT design processes and applying complex transformations across a data pipeline.
• Experience or exposure to applied quantitative methods, data modeling, and workflow orchestration; Familiarity with version control and software engineering fundamentals.Bonus points if you have experience with big data frameworks like Spark.
• Outstanding communication and writing skills, with the ability to translate complex and technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
• Excitement about owning projects and thinking in creative ways, especially as it relates to debugging emergent issues and documenting processes
• Proactive, as the team is geographically disbursed
