About this position

Within the Knowledge, Innovation and Communications Department (KIC), the Information Services Unit (ISU) through its Digital Intelligence team, conducts data collection and analysis to provide evidence and insights that can improve our knowledge, innovation, and communication products and services. We are looking for a strategic data science professional, specialized in unstructured data analysis, to support its established team of Social Listening and Digital Media Monitoring.

The Data Science Consultant will analyze datasets from internal and external sources to elaborate reports, research on public perception around development topics, and impact evaluation analysis of the actions of knowledge, innovation and communications taken by the organization. The consultant will also monitor data from Social Listening and Media Monitoring platforms (such as Brand watch and Lexis Nexis) to inform planning, reporting, and decision making of our department and other business units across the IDB Group. You will work in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, with special focus on generating insights and intelligence from the data you process, elaborating user-friendly reports and analysis to a variety of internal audiences, including executive counterparts.

What you’ll do:

  • Monitor social media and digital channels through a variety of platforms (such as Brand watch, Lexis Nexis, and the Google suite) to inform on public perception, relevant trends and brand positioning.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analyses to identify patterns, trends, and issues relevant to communication, knowledge, and innovation activities, and to inform the development of future efforts.
  • Use web-based data collection tools to gather and analyze information from public data sources on an ongoing and systematic basis, including ongoing maintenance, audit, and governance of the digital intelligence data collection on IDB brands and sectors.
  • Conduct and support research projects that leverage public opinion data (online news and social media among others) to understand a given topic, sector, or country to inform strategies and provide inputs for business performance analyses.
  • Write reports and analysis highlighting key insights, providing supportive data, and communicating findings in a clear and executive manner. Be creative in the way of communicating data, focusing on generating a coherent and engaging storytelling.
  • Develop user-friendly data visualizations and dashboards to provide stakeholders with tools for decision-making and to socialize digital data across the IDB in a simple and compelling way.
  • Identify gaps in the data collection process and integrate new datasets, technology, and techniques into ISU’s analytics processes.
  • Support the development of new analytical (network and predictive) models to better inform decision-making and identify influencers.
  • Provide technical guidance to specialists within and outside KIC regarding data strategy, data collection and processing, report, and insight generation.
  • The position requires occasional monitoring of real-time data outside business hours.

What you'll need:

  • Education: bachelor’s degree in marketing, Statistics, Economics, Business, Computer Science or another related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in data analysis techniques including data mining, data cleaning, statistical analysis, and data visualization.
  • Languages: Proficiency in Spanish and English, spoken and written, is required. Additional knowledge of French and Portuguese is preferable.

Technical Skills:

  • Experience in programming languages commonly used in data analysis such as Python, R, SQL, Boolean coding or similar.
  • Knowledge of social media monitoring tools such as Brand watch, Talkwalker, Lexis Nexis or Hootsuite, is a plus.
  • Experience in designing dashboards and reports for communicating analytical findings.

Desirable Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify patterns, trends, and anomalies in data.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality results within given time constraints.
  • Basic understanding of statistical methods for analyzing data, such as hypothesis testing, regression analysis, and clustering techniques.

  • Citizenship1: You are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries with residency or legal permit to work in selected countries (see foot note for selected countries)
  • Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.

Type of contract and duration:

  • Type of contract: National Consultant (National Remote Modality).
  • Length of contract: 12 months.
  • Work Location: Remote.
  • Remote Modality: The selected candidate will not provide services from the Bank’s office and will not be provided a physical space on the premises of the Bank’s Country Office. The candidate selected will be responsible for setting up the space, and for having the equipment, internet, and phone accesses to accomplish these TORs, outside the Bank’s office. Access to the Bank’s systems will be arranged in coordination with the Bank.
