Rakuten Advertising is looking for a Statistician/Data Science Intern to join our Measurement Science team.

To create one of the world’s richest commerce data sets and help deliver never-been-seen insights on customer purchase behavior, the Measurement Science team at Rakuten Advertising is the core of what the company does with direct impact to our clients and their use of our products. We are responsible for developing a high-quality weighting and projection schema to deliver accurate and consistent sales as well as share estimates to our clients. With a panel of nearly 6 million users, our weighting and projection aims to correct the bias of our data and turn our panel into one that is truly representative of the US online shopping universe.

Measurement Science provides other teams within Rakuten Advertising expertise in our panel development, assisting with new products, data feeds and analytics. We are responsible for creating and adhering to the best practices and approaches for panel weighting and survey design. The team’s core value of integrity applies to our processes, client deliverables, and team relationships.

As a Data Science Intern with Measurement Science at Rakuten Advertising, you will spend a mix of your time researching industry-standard and new solutions for sample selection, weighting and projection, as well as investigating our current products and identifying key enhancements to improve the quality of our deliverables. You will work closely with our Engineering team to test, implement, and productionize these solutions. You will work with world-class data scientists with a wide range of educational, professional, and cultural backgrounds.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in sampling, weighting, and projection enhancements
  • Build quality checks and warning systems for data inconsistencies
  • Rapidly prototype enhancements and new ideas
  • Prioritize client concerns and address with solutions that value data integrity
  • Research and implement data fusion techniques

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, operations research, economics, business or fields that employ rigorous data analysis
  • Strong applied statistics skills: Experience with regression, inference, imputation, time series, clustering,, significance testing, estimation, statistical quality control, optimization, Bayesian methods and/or similar approaches
  • Proficiency with Python, R, and other statistical packages
  • Experience with large data sets or SQL
  • Strong verbal, presentation, and written skills
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Desire to learn and continually upgrade skills
  • Disposition to simplify research, work processes, and complex statistical concepts
  • Quantitative aptitude with proven data analysis and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and communicate technical concepts clearly and concisely in oral and written form.
  • Ability to transition complicated processes to others and take over complicated processes from others
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Enthusiasm for working hard and having fun in a dynamic environment!
