Primary Responsibilities

In the role of Machine Learning Engineer, we will count on you to:

  • Support the development and deployment of AI tools, products, and systems to support the growth and success of the AI services within the Transportation Digital Delivery and Data Acquisition Program (DA&DD) in coordination with the AI Services Lead and the DA&DD Director.
  • Support the development of the AI related marketing materials, including but not limited to project sheets, AI stack portfolio, pursuit processes, and qualifications.
  • Work with cross-functional teams of AI, project delivery, engineering, and project management to help support Digital Delivery team’s AI strategy into practical services, solutions, and products.
  • Act as the subject matter expert in alignment with the Digital Delivery AI Services Lead to support the delivery of high-quality AI solutions for clients on time and on budget.
  • Design, build, fine-tune, and maintain efficient, reusable, and reliable production-level ML models.
  • Support development of reports, and presentations to provide concise and effective communications to key stakeholders on Transportation and Digital Delivery AI services.
  • Apply state-of-the-art AI/ML technologies to solve complex engineering problems.
  • Ensure the robustness of AI systems through effective CI/CD practices.
  • Work with Azure cloud infrastructure to deploy and scale AI applications to support large active users of computer vision and large language model services.
  • Monitor and update machine learning models in production environments.
  • Stay current on AI trends and technologies, and continuously evaluate and recommend new solutions and approaches to enhance the DA&DD AI capabilities.
  • Work in collaboration with the HDR’s Information Technology Group (ITG) on identifying and determining computing infrastructure and deployment needs.
  • Supporting the needs of HDR’s AI Task Force around identifying AI policy governance and quality control needs for successful and safe implementations of AI applications and products.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • A minimum of 5 years related experience
  • Efficient use of the internet and other electronic and hard copy media for research
  • Strong Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Project and Visio skills
  • Expert Microsoft Access and Excel skills
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to compile and present summary level information
  • Ability to obtain, cleanse, merge and analyze data from multiple sources
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and strong relationship, organizational and follow-up skills
  • Self-starter with proven track record of accomplishments
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • In-depth knowledge of AI science, particularly machine learning and deep learning methods.
  • 5+ years of experience in developing machine learning models and deep learning algorithms.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, ML frameworks and libraries (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn).
  • Experience with computer vision, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), object detection, image segmentation, and 3D point cloud data processing.
  • Experience in natural language processing and understanding large language models (such as GPTs, Llama, Gemini, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability in designing, developing, and deploying chatbots.
  • Expertise in Azure cloud services, including Azure Machine Learning, Azure Functions, and Azure DevOps for CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience working with Docker, Kubernetes, and other containerization technologies.
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and CI/CD tools.
  • Proven track record of delivering production-level code with a focus on scalability, maintainability, and security.
  • Ability to interface with key project stakeholders, AI leaders, civil engineers, AI/ML engineers, and data scientists.
  • Ability to translate and communicate technical concepts and complex AI solutions to the project stakeholders.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, including ability to gather, organize and interpret data for process monitoring or business case development.
  • Ability to collaborate, solve ambiguous problems with critical thinking, and think innovatively.
  • Possess a strong combination of team player mentality, professional demeanor, exceptional interpersonal skills, exceptional listening skills, and a commitment to providing top-notch internal and external customer service while always acting with integrity and taking the ethical and responsible approach.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work with a diverse range of individuals and consistently foster positive relationships by finding common ground and promoting collaboration.
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS, SQL Server and/or Crystal Reports
  • Experience in an A/E/C industry
