The Finance and Risk practice, part of Oliver Wyman`s Financial Services Group, is seeking an Engagement Manager to support our rapidly growing Australian business, which is a key strategic priority for the firm. Oliver Wyman’s Finance and Risk practice is the core element of the world’s top strategic risk management consultancy, and is engaged to solve the most challenging problems at the largest and most complex global financial institutions.

Oliver Wyman`s Finance and Risk practice advises clients in the financial services sector on how to adapt their finance and risk management strategies to meet evolving supervisory expectations, increasing competition within the banking sector and changing capital markets dynamics. Our projects focus on issues at the top of the C-suite (in particular CFO, CRO) and Board agendas, and span a wide spectrum of issues and solutions. A particular focus in the immediate future of the practice is on the implications of digital technology and advanced analytics for future state of finance and risk management. Our recent projects have covered topics including:

  • Automated digital lending credit strategy design and model development, for retail e.g. BNPL, mortgage etc. through to commercial and corporate lending
  • Stress Testing strategy diagnostic and modelling suite deployment
  • Asset / liability, interest rate risk, and liquidity risk management strategy and exposure modelling
  • Risk-appetite driven pricing and performance measurement strategies and supporting analytics
  • Next gen analytical modeling with a focus on development of financial and non-financial risk models, portfolio/instrument level valuation models and strategic planning and forecasting models using modern ML analytical methodologies and technology
  • Strategic financial resource management initiatives (e.g. balance sheet management, RWA optimization)
  • Recovery and resolution planning

Key Responsibilities:

Engagement Managers direct the day-to-day work of our consulting teams, working side-by-side with our clients. The Engagement Manager position offers excellent career and growth opportunities for talented, highly motivated professionals with notable prior experience. Engagement Managers are given the opportunity for rapid professional growth, to participate in entrepreneurial work, and to share in the success of the team. Initial responsibilities may include:

  • Leading teams of consultants in complex analysis and strategic problem solving including: problem framing, the use of advanced analytical techniques, results synthesis, and identification of client implications
  • Overseeing and guiding the consulting team as they develop hypotheses; manage data collection, model creation and analyses; conduct primary and secondary research; creatively tackle information limitations; and surface insights
  • Supporting Partners in project execution through excellent project management including: work planning, managing work flow, upward management and coaching/developing more junior team members
  • Managing client relationships and networks, presenting to senior audiences, and working day-to-day with senior and mid-level clients
  • Effectively communicating issues and solutions in formal and informal settings, through written and verbal communication

Experience Required:

Just as every client project is different, we recognize and value the diversity of backgrounds and skill sets for successful Engagement Manager candidates. We are seeking high-caliber individuals who want to join our winning team. Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience, ideally with a top-tier strategy consulting firm (or other similar organizations with project-based, team-oriented environments)
  • In-depth knowledge of topics in Finance and Risk gained through experience in the industry or in other Top Tier consultancy houses, prior experience with finance, risk, treasury and strategic planning related topics.
  • Hands on experience building analytical models in Python and / or R
  • Familiarity with SQL server and ideally experience working with Hadoop, Hive, Spark or equivalent big data infrastructure
  • Hands on experience / familiarity with the design and deployment of non-linear modelling techniques e.g. Random Forest, GBMs (XGBoost) etc. as well as strong comfort with traditional linear regression modelling techniques

Skills and Attributes:

  • Track record of leading and managing teams, and delivering against tight deadlines in fast-paced, demanding environments
  • Strong background in strategic problem solving with demonstrable analytical skills and experience with the platforms and techniques listed above
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Undergraduate or advanced degree from a top academic program
  • Willingness to travel
  • Fluency in English
