DESCRIPTION

Verily’s Biostatistics and Epidemiology team supports Verily’s mission through generating rigorous evidence that drives our business, optimizing data collection and data structures, ensuring regulatory compliance in terms of study and experimental design, and advancing healthcare, science, and medical device needs. We capture, organize, and analyze data across multiple dimensions and levels of complexity to make credible inferences that can be acted on to improve healthcare. As the Head, Biostatistics and Epidemiology, you will lead and manage a team of biostatisticians and analysts in designing and planning programs and studies, executing analyses, and interpreting data, and will be a strategic thought partner and key contributor to efforts to increase the growth and application of Verily’s data, platform technologies, devices, and healthcare solutions.

The intersection of the fields of biostatistics, epidemiology, machine learning, artificial intelligence combined with the dramatic improvements in computing is creating a fertile environment for methods that include the optimal approach for each field to generate insights. We are seeking a leader who can manage a growing group of quantitative and methodological experts to solve practical, real world problems in health and healthcare.

Ideally this role will sit in South San Francisco but we are open to candidates working remotely within the United States.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, direct, and oversee activities in the areas of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, including the implementation of strategic organizational plans to ensure high quality and timely quantitative expertise and analysis.
  • Manage and mentor the performance and career development for members of the team and provide regular guidance to nurture Verily’s engaging and collaborative culture.
  • Work with other functional areas across Verily to set product development strategies that increase the probability of success, and create an innovative environment, agile and clear processes, and high levels of productivity.
  • Participate in interactions with the regulatory agencies and corporate partners on the biostatistical aspects of product development.
  • Develop a presence for Verily in the organizations and professional societies developing cutting edge methods.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum qualifications:

  • PhD in Biostatistics/Statistics or equivalent with 15+ years relevant work experience or MS in Biostatistics/Statistics, or equivalent with 20+ years relevant experience.
  • Able to develop innovative/creative statistical/technical solutions to complex problems, balancing statistical and scientific rigor with pragmatic application.
  • Expertise in working with diverse data sources (e.g., electronic health records, claims, patient-reported outcomes, social determinants of health, molecular assays, device data).
  • Broad and thorough understanding of statistical principles and clinical experiment methodology and relevant statistical tools and packages.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in meeting regulatory guidelines, both FDA and international regulatory agencies.
  • Broad knowledge of medical/biological terminology and clinical practice.

Preferred qualifications:

  • In-depth experiences in the clinical development process and the role of biostatistics to design studies and experiments to generate the most relevant evidence.
  • Strong people manager with the ability to motivate teams and ensure productivity and smooth operations in conditions with ambiguity. Able to manage a portfolio of projects simultaneously and adapt strategically.
  • Excellent leadership and effective communication skills; able to artfully tease out the important questions, direct focus, translate questions into evaluable objectives, and develop and apply innovative methodologies for management and analysis of clinical research and healthcare data.
  • Ability to work at the interface of biostatistics, engineering, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to develop effective methods of optimizing collection, analysis and interpretation of complex, multidimensional data.
  • Comfort working with industry and academic leaders. 
  • Ability to represent Verily in professional organizations critical to the development of new methods and standards in the field.
