Job Description

Minimum qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., Statistics, Bioinformatics, Economics) or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of experience in data analysis or related field as a Statistician or Data Scientist.
  • 10 years of experience in people management or leadership.
  • Experience with statistical software (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB, pandas) and database languages.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree in a quantitative discipline (e.g., Statistics, Operations Research, Bioinformatics, Economics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering).
  • 15 years of tech industry work experience as a statistician, bioinformatician, or data scientist. Experience in statistical data analysis.
  • 12 years of leadership experience, including people management, with experience partnering with machine learning and engineering teams.
  • Applied experience with machine learning on large datasets.
  • Experience articulating business questions and using mathematical techniques to arrive at an answer using available data.
  • Ability to select the right statistical tools given a data analysis problem.

As the Data Science Director, you'll lead a group of data scientists focused on improving the recommendations across YouTube’s feed surfaces. These improvements are focused and measured from the perspectives of model quality, human evaluation, and responsibility, all of which is under the domain of the Discovery team. You will inspire and provide technical guidance to a team of quantitative analysts that you will manage directly. You will also own collaboration with senior ML engineering and product stakeholders focused on YouTube’s discovery experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team to mine through data to identify opportunities for YouTube.
  • Build trusted relationships with engineering and product and continue to expand the data science team’s sphere of influence.
  • Manage a data science team. Interact cross-functionally with a wide variety of leaders and teams, and work closely with Engineering and Product leadership.
  • Work with large datasets and solve difficult analysis problems, applying advanced analytical methods. Conduct analyses, including data gathering and requirements specification, processing, analysis, ongoing deliverables, and presentations.
  • Make business recommendations with effective presentations of findings at multiple levels of stakeholders through visual displays of quantitative information.
