Job Description

We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join the team at Arch.

Strategic Analytics is a growing team that develops innovative predictive models and analytical tools to improve pro?tability and growth as well as providing deep analytical insight for decision makers. Advanced analytics techniques play a critical role in this mission. To be successful, we need to develop powerful models, tools and insights that give Arch a unique, competitive advantage.

As Senior Data Scientist you will play a crucial leadership role in developing the team’s analytics capability. You will work on high-pro?le advanced analytics projects that drive the company’s decision-making and strategy. You will work with or direct other data scientists to build best-in-class predictive models with creativity, statistical rigor and business sense. As an important member of the Strategic Analytics team, you will help advance our advanced analytics capabilities and shape how Arch thinks about data and analytics.

Job Responsibilities

• Work closely with business partners to understand the business problems they are trying to solve and help to develop the best-suited analytics solution.
• Collaborate in cross-functional teams and share ideas to solve complex business problems.
• Build strong partnerships with peers across the organization to support project goals and boarder team needs.
• Build predictive models using advanced analytics techniques including GLMs, natural language processing, and machine learning.
• Develop powerful insights and tools using a variety of analytical techniques and technologies.
• Discover, explore and analyse internal and external datasets for the purpose of developing advanced analytics models.
• Help establish best practices and repeatable processes for the Strategic Analytics team.
• Provide thought leadership on new, innovative techniques, approaches and software.
• Guide, support, mentor and develop the growing team of predictive modelers and data scientists.

Required Skills/Experience

• Ability to design, build and implement new modelling approaches.

• Excellent verbal and written communications skills; ability to convey complex concepts to people across the organization.
• Exceptional teamwork skills required to play a key role in cross-functional teams. Ability to collaborate and build trusting relationships with business partners.

• Comfortable handling ambiguous concepts and breaking down complex problems into manageable pieces.
• Ability to apply critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
• Detailed understanding of statistical theory, predictive modelling, data mining and other advanced analytical techniques, for example: logistic regression, decision trees, gradient boosting, clustering, text mining, random forests, survival analysis.
• Excellent R or Python skills required as well as a knowledge of SQL.
• Knowledge of visualization tools such as PowerBI is a plus.

Desired Skills/Experience

• 8+ years’ experience in advanced analytics role, of which 5+ years in the insurance industry, preferably working on a mixture of traditional and digital products. Experience in a commercial lines insurance setting is an advantage.
• Proven hands-on experience developing generalized linear models in an insurance setting including loss ratio, frequency/severity, pure premium, claims modelling.
• Track record of delivering signi?cant business value from small or non-standard data sets.

Education

• Degree in statistics, mathematics, engineering or similar quantitative ?elds; or signi?cant experience in advanced data analytics
