About you

As Director of Marketing Analytics & Data Science, you will be leading a team of ~5 decision scientists who partner with Udemy’s Marketing organization to shape and execute our marketing roadmap, evolve Udemy’s best practices in marketing attribution modeling and experimental design, and optimize the ROI of our marketing spend. You will be leaned upon to drive meaningful business impact through thought leadership with our CMO and other marketing leaders.

Data Scientists at Udemy are expected to draw upon a combination of quantitative methods and business intuition to deliver actionable, prescriptive insights which influence key business decisions. Our marketing decision science team supports and enables user growth and demand generation across both our Direct to Consumer (DC2) and our Udemy Business (B2B) portfolios. The ideal candidate for this role is a sharp, independent data leader with a talent for drawing structure out of ambiguity, a relentless focus on driving meaningful business impact, and a passion for improving lives through learning.

About this role:

We want you to think about questions like:

  • How should we determine the incremental value of different marketing channels?
  • What role should different marketing and analytical frameworks (MMM, DDA, attribution modeling, CLTV, etc.) serve in establishing our overall marketing budget?
  • How can we better optimize spend between Udemy Business (UB) and Consumer (D2C) segments?
  • What drives variability in channel or campaign performance, both overall and on a segmented basis? And how can we further optimize spend across channels?
  • How can we improve performance within marketing channels by optimizing bids and bidding strategies?
  • What is the ideal cadence for marketing emails?
  • What types of ad creatives are most effective?

What you'll be doing:

  • Partner with marketing leaders to shape the team’s roadmap and drive execution, while also collaborating cross-functionally with product, engineering, data science and operations teams at Udemy
  • Develop and lead a team of marketing decision scientists to deliver value through advanced analytics, experimentation, measurement and predictive/prescriptive technologies
  • Drive measurement, testing, analysis of projects and initiatives when needed, while ruthlessly but thoughtfully prioritizing based on urgency and impact
  • Partner closely with Udemy’s Analytics (data) Engineering organization to architect and manage data sets required for downstream marketing analytics and reporting
  • Help evangelize and explain to business partners how marketing performance is being measured, which will include enhancing how we to execute statistically rigorous A/B tests, handle holdout groups, optimize ROI performance through multi-touch attribution, media mix modeling, and other heuristic attribution methods
  • Collaborate with other data and analytics leaders at Udemy to evolve our long-term data strategy/vision
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance and career mentorship for team members, while maintaining high quality standards for decision science work and recruiting

What you’ll have:

  • 5+ years of direct experience working in marketing analytics/decision science analyzing the performance of both paid spend and lifecycle marketing (e.g., paid search, affiliate/partner marketing, SEO, and/or offline marketing) with 2+ years of team management
  • 8+ years of work or related experience across any combination of product, sales, marketing or business analytics/decision/data science functions
  • Strong working knowledge of marketing science, including frameworks and technologies for media mix modeling and multi-touch attribution
  • Strong knowledge of applied statistics, experimental design, and causal inference
  • Proficiency with SQL and 1+ programming languages (e.g., Python/R), as well as at least one BI visualization tool (preferably Tableau)
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Science or a relevant field; Masters degree preferred but not required

We understand that not everyone will match each of the above qualifications. However, we also realize that everyone has unique experiences that can add value to our company. Even if you think your background might not perfectly align, we'd love to hear from you!

You’ll also have unlimited access to Udemy courses, monthly UDays (meeting-free professional development days), and a generous annual professional development stipend.
  • Our reason to exist is to revolutionize learning – that calls for taking risks and learning from failures.
