Main Purpose:

We are seeking a skilled data scientist to join our team and work closely with our Bulk Minerals trading and operating teams (i.e. Coal, Iron Ore and Dry chartering desks). The successful candidate will be accountable for creating advanced analytics and models (both with external and internal data). They will hold a crucial position, utilizing their expertise to evaluate the feasibility and implementation of cutting-edge machine learning techniques, while engaging with stakeholders across business lines and technology. Key Responsibilities

• Development and maintenance of advanced analytics methods and applications for Bulk teams, both on physical and derivatives sides.
• Contribute to the automation of trading desk processes.
• Acquire a deep understanding of technical projects on the trading desk to better serve commercial needs.
• Collaborate and communicate effectively with stakeholders across different business lines and technology.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• 5+ years of experience with Python, Git and SQL with good understanding of software engineering practices.
• Expert knowledge of machine learning methods and computational statistics (Data Science).
• Strong data modelling skills.
• Masters or PhD in mathematics / physics / engineering / computer science or related field.
• Experience in a trading environment (physical or paper) is highly desirable.
• Experience in logistics/optimization and/or quantitative analysis is a plus.

Key Relationships and Department Overview:

Key Relationships

• Reports to Metals and Minerals Lead Data Scientist (based in Geneva).
• This role will work closely with the global team of Data Scientists, Data Engineers and Platform Engineers.
• Close collaboration with traders and research analysts.

Department

• The Data Science and Engineering team at Trafigura conducts research, develops advanced analytics solutions, and delivers data services to support the trading business and various commercial operations.
• Trafigura's Bulk teams handle both physical and derivative portfolios, relying heavily on data, analysis, and process automation. They seek a candidate who can gain a deep understanding of their business and ultimately assume responsibility for a range of technical tasks on the desk.
• Day-to-day management will be provided by Traders and Analysts, while the Data Science and Engineering team offers technical guidance and supplementary engineering and analytics support as needed.
