Job Description

Recidiviz is thrilled to be hiring an Implementation Engineer to join our team! We’re a small, fast-moving group that partners with state governments to identify opportunities for impact in the criminal justice space. That’s where you come in. We’re looking for an empathetic, fast learner who is excited to own relationships with our state partners’ data teams and prepare raw data for analytics and product development.

About us

Recidiviz is creating safer, healthier communities by improving outcomes for justice-involved people. We build tech that reduces the number of people in prison and helps criminal justice leaders embrace data-driven decision-making.

Using modern data infrastructure and thoughtful product design, we’ve been able to safely and permanently reduce incarceration and improve outcomes. We work side-by-side with leaders of the criminal justice system, justice-impacted individuals, and ecosystem partners to build a better path forward. In addition to the revenue we earn from state partners, some of the most respected philanthropists and foundations support our work.

People who succeed at Recidiviz assume good intent, fix problems when they see them, learn from failure, creatively unstick themselves, and lead with kindness and humility.

About the role

At the core of our work is a process we call ingest: consuming data from various siloed data sources, normalizing and cleaning it, linking it together, and ultimately preparing it for Recidiviz analytics and product development. For each state we work with, there is an up-front process to define the data integration layer that powers ingest for that state, test the integration configuration, and validate the results of our ingest and calculation processes. When integration for a state is completed, we can begin our work to improve the outcomes of the state’s justice systems in earnest. This ingest process is a critical and high impact role that is the chief responsibility of Implementation Engineers at Recidiviz.

We are looking for people who can reason about complex datasets and data models, develop sophisticated data transformations, think clearly about systems, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including external government partners. Just as important, the right person for this role has a collaborative and kind nature, is comfortable taking agency, and can thrive in a dynamic workplace where no two days are the same.

Core responsibilities

  • Define, test, and validate integrations with state data
  • Collaborate effectively and empathetically with points of contact in state governments to develop accurate data integrations
  • Update existing data integrations when called for by new analytics or product development, or changes in underlying data systems
  • Work closely with our State Engagement team to help set the onboarding priority for new states based on knowledge of their data systems and the roadmap of our Implementation Engineering team
  • Work closely with our Data Analytics and Data Science team to ensure they have the data they need to power new analysis and research behind criminal justice reform

Minimum qualifications

  • High empathy and kindness
  • Bachelor’s degree or bootcamp certificate in a technical field or 2+ years of practical experience working with data in a professional environment
  • A desire to explore, troubleshoot, and solve challenging data issues
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience using SQL to transform or analyze data

Preferred qualifications

  • Comfort working with external partners from diverse backgrounds and worldviews, including government staff, researchers, journalists, and other practitioners in criminal justice reform
  • Experience with or exposure to the criminal justice domain, including familiarity with its institutions, workings, and data
  • Experience with the tools in our tech stack, including Python, Postgresql, BigQuery, and Apache Beam
  • Some experience working with programming languages to accomplish basic tasks

Compensation

Our compensation levels are standard across the organization and are set to balance three key goals: hiring new staff, retaining existing staff, and maximizing our impact per dollar. We do not negotiate compensation offers.

Depending on experience, the compensation for this role is:

  • L1 (junior): $75,000
  • L2 (mid-level): $85,000

What we offer

  • Effective, extremely thoughtful colleagues, working together on a mission that matters
  • Generous medical, dental, and vision insurance premiums for you and your dependents
  • Complimentary One Medical membership (depending on location)
  • Flexible and generous time off, including holidays, PTO, sick leave and volunteer time
  • 12 weeks of paid parental leave
  • 401(k) retirement plan with 5% company match and no vesting period
  • Complimentary mental health support via Talkspace
