Role Summary:

As our Head of legal, you will play a pivotal role in shaping our legal strategy and ensuring we navigate the regulatory landscape. You will support our commercial team to draft, review and finalise contracts (with customer, suppliers, etc.) and define our standpoints when it comes to public matters.

Key Responsibilities:

Development of our legal strategy:

• Work closely with our founding team to develop and implement legal strategies aligned with Mistral AI's goals and objectives.

Regulatory compliance & policy creation and implementation:

• Research, interpret, and advise on local, state, and federal laws and regulations relevant to our industry, ensuring full compliance.
• Work closely with the product team on features that are entailed by compliance requirements.
• Work closely with the business team on managing customer expectations and building a successful narrative on the topic of compliance.
• Assist our policy department in its discussion with the regulators.
• Draft, review, and implement company policies and procedures, ensuring they align with legal requirements and best practices.

Contract negotiation & dispute resolution:

• Review, negotiate, and draft a range of contracts, including vendor agreements, partnership agreements, and client contracts.
• Handle or oversee the resolution of legal disputes, potentially liaising with external counsel when necessary.

Corporate development

• Participation in deal making processes such as fund-raising, M&A discussions, strategic partnerships.

Intellectual property protection, risk assessment and mitigation:

• Advise on and manage intellectual property matters, including trademarks, copyrights, and patents.
• Identify and assess legal risks and provide proactive guidance on risk mitigation strategies.

Legal documentation:

• Establish and maintain a robust system for legal documentation, including contracts, policies, and compliance records.

Team training and education:

• Provide legal training and awareness programs to our team, ensuring a strong understanding of legal obligations.

Qualifications:

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree
• 5+ years of experience in a legal capacity in a startup or technology-driven environment or as a lawyer
• High interest in and knowledge of AI-specific regulations and compliance requirements.
• Demonstrated expertise in contract negotiation and drafting.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
• Creative legal thinking in a field that strongly lacks jurisprudence

Preferred Qualifications:

• Admission to the bar in France
• Prior experience in a startup or similar early-stage environment
