Job Description

Role Description

Your North Star: Create, analyze, and visualize foundational data that we can use to improve the lives of moms and babies.

We’re looking to bring on a data scientist to our small but growing data team. The role will help us create, analyze, transform, and visualize data that is used to inform both our business decisions and the care that we deliver to patients. We have a highly data-driven culture and you will be instrumental in advancing that even further. Specifically, you will:

  • Execute analyses related to our value-based care program
  • Work closely with our Product, Design, Marketing, Clinical, and Partnerships team to quantify the effectiveness of our clinical program, and help drive quality improvement initiatives (for example, helping reduce the rate at which babies end up in the NICU)
  • Define requirements for Engineering to help enable your work
  • Build out visualizations and reporting dashboards for our partners using our clinical data
  • Lead product analytics for our patient and clinical applications
  • Play a foundational role in building the data culture of Pomelo, creating new processes and building new tools
  • Collaborate with Product to define business north stars and KPIs for our teams to rally around, and track our performance on them appropriately
  • Have substantial opportunities to drive end-to-end projects, and for population and cohort analysis

Who you are

  • 2+ years professional experience in data analytics, data science, data engineering, or statistical analysis involving SQL
  • 2+ years working in healthcare or health tech
  • Proficient in at least one programming language (e.g., Python)
  • Passionate about the problem Pomelo is trying to tackle
  • Driven to put data at the center of Pomelo’s decision making
  • Excited to work cross-functionally across technical and non-technical stakeholders, including folks who do not share your technical expertise
  • Comfortable scoping and tackling ambiguous problems
  • A strong communicator who can easily and quickly understand the needs of different audiences

Bonus points if you have any of the following

  • Experience building models for risk-based/ value-based healthcare contracts
  • Experience working with DBT
  • Experience working with FHIR data
  • Experience at a startup
  • Experience working with BigQuery or Google Cloud
  • A strong grasp of healthcare economics and/or outcomes research
  • Familiarity with HEDIS metrics

Why you should join our team

By joining Pomelo, you will get in on the ground floor of a fast-moving, well-funded, and mission-driven startup that always puts the patient first. You will learn, grow and be challenged -- and have fun with your team while doing it.

We strive to create an environment where employees from all backgrounds are respected. We also offer:

  • Competitive healthcare benefits
  • Generous equity compensation
  • Unlimited vacation
  • Membership in the First Round Network (a curated and confidential community with events, guides, thousands of Q&A questions, and opportunities for 1-1 mentorship)

At Pomelo, we are committed to hiring the best team to improve outcomes for all mothers and babies, regardless of their background. We need diverse perspectives to reflect the diversity of problems we face and the population we serve. We look to hire people from a variety of backgrounds, including but not limited to race, age, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, national origin, religion, disability, and veteran status.

Our salary ranges are based on paying competitively for our company’s size and industry, and are one part of the total compensation package that also includes equity, benefits, and other opportunities at Pomelo Care. In accordance with New York City, Colorado, California, and other applicable laws, Pomelo Care is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. Individual pay decisions are ultimately based on a number of factors, including qualifications for the role, experience level, skillset, geography, and balancing internal equity. Given that this role is open to candidates of different skill levels, determining a salary range is challenging. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $120,000 to $180,000. We expect most candidates to fall in the middle of the range. We also believe that your personal needs and preferences should be taken into consideration, so we allow some choice between equity and cash.
