Job Description

Beacon AI seeks a Head of Engineering to continue building and leading a growing engineering team. This role will lead the Engineering team aimed at taking the Beacon AI autonomy products from proof-of-concept through eventual commercial certification.

As the Head of Engineering, you will lead the development of safety-critical flight and ground software and hardware. The company is primarily data and software focused but hardware and processing data has an important role to play as well. You will manage and grow the team, assist in building out the strategic roadmap, establish processes and tools, and deliver aerospace-quality software.

The software stack includes Swift/iOS, React/Web, AWS cloud backend/infra, DS/ML, and edge compute with some embedded systems/systems integration.

Engineering leadership expertise and experience, technical mastery in at least one domain, passion for aviation, and an agile mindset are must-haves for this role. This role reports to the CEO.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Build a great product that users love.
• Create and maintain a strategic roadmap for the software team.
• Build a stellar team by recruiting, mentoring, and retaining world-class engineers and leaders.
• Perform engineering management and leadership to maximize the performance and upskilling of the group.
• Lead resource planning across the team.
• Work with subject matter experts and project leaders to architect and implement safe, efficient software.
• Develop and implement tools and processes for software development and certification,
• Oversee the technical quality of the software work across all projects.
• Enhancing a culture of quick, intentional, targeted iterations leading to the development of high-quality software.
• Fostering diversity and inclusion.

Required Qualifications:

• BS or MS in an engineering discipline and 6-8 years of industry experience
• 3-5 years of experience in engineering management
• Experience in building and growing high-performing teams at a fast pace while maintaining team cohesion
• Strong fundamental understanding of core software disciplines, including system architecture, Verification and Validation, and data management
• Experience building production- robotics, computer vision, machine learning, etc., related products in a production setting
• Practical experience developing and testing aircraft software
• Production Experience with some or all of the following languages C/C++, python, javascript
• Natural team leader, good communicator, self-motivated with hyperdrive
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure

Desirable Qualifications and Experience:

• Autonomy, self-driving cars, a delivery robot, or UAS.
• Passion for and experience with aerospace or aviation.
• FAA certification (DO-178, DO-254, DO-331, DO-160G) and software processes.
• Experience with ROS, RTOS, Green Hills, Wind River, and/or DO-178 or equivalent.
• Developing software simulators for vehicles.
• Experience with aircraft flight testing.
