Job Description

That is why Eight Sleep is looking for a Senior R&D Data Scientist who has experience working with human physiology data and generating insights for new features and for members. The Senior R&D Data Scientist will be responsible for literature review for data analysis, experimental design for A/B testing based on analyses, exploratory data analysis for new features, insight generation for members, data analysis of novel R&D experiments, and co-writing of peer-reviewed publications, white papers, and blog posts (seehere for examples).

The research studies at Eight Sleep will include internal product validation, new prototype testing, new feature development, and large-scale, external validation studies. This role will report to the Director of Science & Clinical Research at Eight Sleep, on the Research & Development team.

This position is ideal for a scientist looking to work with a highly collaborative and scientifically rigorous team. This is a full time position with benefits, and the position is ideally based out of Boston, but can be discussed if desiring a hybrid or remote position.

Location: Team is based out of the Boston area; but open to remote or hybrid roles.

How you'll contribute

  • Literature review & experimental design for new features, data analysis, and experiments:
  • Ability to review the literature for understanding of physiological changes with temperature regulation and sleep, new exploratory analyses and features.
  • Competent at experimental design and how to test new features or insights in beta testing, including determining sample sizes required and identifying go/no-go criteria.

Data engineering:

  • Ability to parse, time-align, and manage data from multiple sources for data analyses.
  • Data analysis (statistical analyses and exploratory analyses):
  • Data analysis of our R&D studies. This may include validation studies as well as experimental analyses for new features.
  • Exploratory analyses for new feature generation of current datasets. Ability to think abstractly and openly about a dataset and to uncover key insights from big data.
  • You will co-write publications, including blog posts, white papers, and peer-reviewed publications.

Insight generation:

  • Use machine learning techniques to develop new insights for members that link Pod temperature to physiological changes during sleep (e.g. impact of Pod temperature of sleep stages and HR, HRV, etc).
  • Includes working cross functionally with product, marketing, and software teams.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Physiology, or similar
  • 5 years of work experience as a Data Scientist, including 1+ years of human physiology data analysis in wearables
  • 1+ years of human physiology data analysis in wearable space or similar.
  • Minimum 2 years coding experience in Python or R; must be able to run basic statistical tests (i.e. t-tests, ANOVA, descriptive statistics, multiple regression, Bland-altman plots, MAE, ME, SEE, descriptive statistics).
  • Adept at data visualization (plotly, seaborn, matplotlib, etc) & communicate findings cross-functionally.
  • 1-2+ years of supervised and unsupervised machine learning experience: e.g. regression (ridge, lasso, GAMs, polynomial, smoothing splines, logistic, LDA, QDA, KNN), K-means clustering, PCA, SVMs, tree-based models.
  • Superior communications skills, excellent time management & organizational skills, high attention to detail, and ability to quickly adapt to changes in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with deploying algorithms into production.
  • Proficient in SQL and Github.

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree + 3 years of industry work experience
  • PhD + 1 year industry work experience in Data Science, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics, Physiology, or similar.
  • 2+ years experience working on research involving wearable devices, medical devices, or in industry related to tech that measures/monitors humans.
  • Strong knowledge in sleep science & human physiology.
