Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work in the area of impacts-relevant climate data analytics, with the goal of evaluating credibility of new and existing high-resolution climate data products for use in vulnerability assessments and adaptation planning. Research topics may include but are not limited to.

  • Understanding local-to-regional changes in water resources, extreme weather events, or infrastructural vulnerability.
  • Novel techniques to quantify or constrain uncertainties in observational data.
  • Novel techniques to quantify or constrain uncertainty in future climate projections.
  • Climate data processing tools or toolchains (including machine learning methods); or
  • Climate data visualization and communication.

This position is in conjunction with a LLNL lab-directed research and development (LDRD) project and LLNL’s PCMDI project (pcmdi.llnl.gov). This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth, and Energy Division of the Physical Life Sciences Directorate.

In this role you will

  • Conduct original research addressing applications of impacts-relevant climate data.
  • Analyze data from global/regional climate models, global storm resolving models , satellite and in-situ observations and/or statistically downscaled products.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and present technical results at scientific conferences.
  • Travel as required to coordinate research with collaborators.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Atmospheric Science, Climate Science, Computer Science or a closely related field.
  • Experience conducting research in atmospheric science, climate science, computer science or a closely related field.
  • Experience and expertise in one or more of the following areas: climate data processing and analysis, climate change, weather/climate impacts, hydrologic cycle, uncertainty quantification, climate modeling, dynamical downscaling, statistical downscaling, climate data visualization.
  • Experience analyzing output from regional or global climate models, including CMIP, NA-CORDEX, and/or NARCCAP data.
  • Experience and expertise with statistical methods for analyzing climate data.
  • Proficient in use of Python for data analysis and visualization.
  • Proficient in use of Unix/Linux environments, including shell scripting.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills as evidenced by published results and presentations.
  • Experience collaborating effectively with a team of scientists of diverse backgrounds and ability to travel to coordinate research with collaborators.

This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
