Job Description

This position is for a Senior, Optical Simulation Engineer working in Magic Leap's Optical Engineering team. The role is part software engineer, applied mathematician, and physicist, in that order. The Senior Optical Simulation Engineer will be responsible for innovation and evolution of key optical component-level technology to enable the next generation of our Mixed Reality experience. The Senior Optical Simulation Engineer is expected to develop software tools that enable the design and implementation of optical components and to effectively contribute to technical deliverables in these areas to achieve aggressive goals. 

Responsibilities:

  • A key member of the OE team with a focus on simulation and layout tool development.
  • Development and use of custom in house software as well as other simulation tools for eyepiece design, simulation, layout, and fabrication.
  • Enhancement of in-house design capabilities.
  • Collecting, analyzing and interpreting data; technical problem solving; innovating creative solutions, and clear communication of findings.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • 30% geometric layout
    • 80% layout creation, modification, and design
    • 15% layout software tools development
    • 5% data ingestion (reading/parsing technical drawings such as DXFs)
  • 70% simulation software development
    • 60% python
      • 90% simulation library development
      • 10% modeling examples
    • 35% C++ (simulation core)
    • 5% Other: C, shell

Qualifications:

  • Must be an expert computer programmer/software developer (C++ and Python)- required 
  • Must possess moderate understanding of computer graphics and computational geometry.
  • Must possess moderate understanding of linear algebra and numerical analysis.
  • Must possess expert knowledge of scientific computing (HPC and simulation, primarily C++ development, and some Python)- required
  • Must possess expert knowledge of nanophotonics (theory and simulation)
  • Experience in developing OpenGL applications.
  • Experience in nanofabrication and clean room processes.
  • Experience with optical measurements.
  • Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Focused on problem resolution and delivering solutions.
  • Must be able to communicate and work well with multidisciplinary groups.

 Education:

  • MS or Ph.D. in CS, applied math, optics, physics or related fields, with 2+ (MS) or 1 (Ph.D.) years of industry experience in optical components or sub-systems.

US Base Salary Range

$123,000 - $172,000 USD
