FAST Labs, the research arm of BAE Systems’ Electronic Systems, is looking for a machine learning Research Scientist to join the Emerging AI Innovation Group. The Emerging AI Innovation Group works on problems related to:

  • AI at the edge
  • Counter and adversarial AI
  • Robustness and trustworthiness

These technologies are being developed to support a wide-range of applications including signals and sensor processing, networking and communications, multi-level fusion, situational understanding, and autonomous decision making and reasoning.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Working with experts across the spectrum of military subject matter experts, data and AI/ML scientists, and software engineers to create trusted AI/ML solutions to challenging problems.
  • Providing technical leadership, algorithm design, customer interaction and shaping, writing technical portions of proposals, or new concept development depending on the specific project.
  • Implementing software prototypes for defense customers to demonstrate feasibility of solutions then transition projects for follow-on development. Consistently work in the cutting edge of DoD technology.
  • Presenting at conferences and helping develop collaborations with academic partners and small businesses/startups.

This position can be located in Burlington, MA; Arlington, VA; Reston, VA; Durham, NC; Merrimack, NH; or Austin, TX.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Bachelors Degree (6+ years professional experience); Masters Degree (4+ years professional experience); PhD (2+ years professional experience) in a science, mathematics, or engineering subject required
  • Expertise in state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms.
  • Experience with prototyping code in Python with packages such as PyTorch, TensorFlow/Keras, scikit-learn, SciPy, etc.
  • Interest in applying AI/ML knowledge to DARPA and DoD challenges (past DoD-industry experience not required).
  • Please note that pursuant to a government contract, this specific position requires US citizenship status and eligibility to obtain a US security clearance.

Preferred Education, Experience, & Skills

  • Expertise and/or an interest in performing applied research in emerging areas such as Edge AI, Adversarial or Counter-AI, Trustworthy and Robust AI
  • Track record of publications or conference presentations
  • Experience briefing customers and writing proposals
  • Experience serving in a technical leadership role
  • Experience with CNNs, RNNs, and transformers a plus
  • Experience with MLOps a plus
  • Experience coding in languages besides Python (CUDA, C++, Java, and/or Matlab) a plus
