Job Description
Supernal is at the forefront of creating emerging mobility solutions that will foster the development of human-centered cities. We are designing a completely new electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft tailored to the mobility needs of future cities. This allows passengers a seamless intermodal journey that safely transports them to their final destination. We fuse research in autonomy, robotics, aviation and services to define a new category of mobility for the world’s communities. We believe in creative thinking and collaboration to help build a better mobility experience for everyone, improving people’s ability to move – whether for work or play.
What we do:
The Battery Technology and Innovation Team has embarked on a mission to support the creation of groundbreaking Battery Technology building a state-of-the-art, safe, balanced, and highly efficient energy storage solution for eVTOL aircraft.
We are looking for an outstanding Algorithm Engineer to create our high voltage Battery Management System! Our ideal candidate will be self-motivated, passionate about electrified aircraft development, and resilient to quickly adapt to direction changes. This creative individual will work closely with hardware and software engineers from multi-functional teams. Would you like to lift off with us? Be part of crafting this exciting new future along with us!
What you can do:
- Develops requirements for different performance prediction algorithms
- R&D of dynamic & high-fidelity battery cell models for use in system modeling, battery gauging & charging for High voltage battery packs
- R&D of algorithms to estimate available State of Energy (SOE) and dynamic State of Power (SOP) of battery pack based on system load profiles and prediction requirements using multiple techniques that give redundant and robust solutions
- Verification of models and algorithms so developed using MIL, SIL, PIL and HIL techniques at battery pack level and support similar activities at system level (System in the Loop testing)
- Verification of model parameter tracking and prediction algorithm accuracies against HW and environmentally induced parameter variabilities using multi domain models (Thermal, electrical) at battery pack level
- Develops test strategies and harnesses for models and algorithms to eliminate issues early in the design phase
- Optimization of algorithm to work within real time computer resource constraints like CPU cycles, memory, and power consumption
- May require up to 10% of domestic and international travels
- Other duties as assigned
What you can contribute:
- Bachelor’s in a related engineering field
- A minimum of 5-8 years of demonstrated battery algorithm development experience in automotive, industrial or consumer electronics or aerospace industries (an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered)
- Demonstrated experience in developing battery prediction algorithms like SOC, SOH, SOP and SOE successfully and launched in a product
- Demonstrated experience in developing battery cell models (ECM, Particle or other) for system simulation
- Expert experience in developing model parameter tracking algorithms
- Experienced in using advanced control techniques like EKF, state observers, machine learning, multi parameter optimization techniques for algorithms
- Excellent chemical understanding of rechargeable Li Ion chemistries, their limitations and control opportunities
- Strong mathematical fundamentals to develop solutions to complex control problems
- Expert skills in modeling tools like Matlab, Simulink, Stateflow, Simscape including Matlab optimization toolboxes
- Good programming skills in languages like C, C++ for real time applications
- Good data analysis skills and scripting skills, preferable in Python, to process large volume of data
- Basic Electrical or Mechanical engineering background to understand cell behavior due to load changes and thermal changes
- Excellent skills in communication, problem solving and critical thinking
- Excellent skills required in technical communication, and reliance on data for issue resolution and decision making
- Proactive delivery of communication and follow up
- Excellent organizational skills, team-oriented thinking, and attention to detail
- Must have the ability to independently prioritize and accomplish work within time constraints
- Self-motivated and forward-thinking personality
- Proficiency with MS Office Suite specifically for data analysis, document creation and reporting
You may also be able to contribute:
- MS or Ph.D., in Control Systems (Emphasis in battery modeling and gauging)
- Experience in aviation with the understanding of DO-178C compliance for SW development
