Job Description

Who we are:

Calico (Calico Life Sciences LLC) is an Alphabet-founded research and development company whose mission is to harness advanced technologies and model systems to increase our understanding of the biology that controls human aging. Calico will use that knowledge to devise interventions that enable people to lead longer and healthier lives. Calico’s highly innovative technology labs, its commitment to curiosity-driven discovery science and, with academic and industry partners, its vibrant drug-development pipeline, together create an inspiring and exciting place to catalyze and enable medical breakthroughs.

Position description:

Calico is seeking a Senior/Principal Data Scientist to join our efforts in advancing novel therapies from target discovery to clinical development. The ideal candidate, working collaboratively with the translational and development teams, will apply their deep technical knowledge in machine learning, probabilistic modeling and methods for analyzing single-cell -omics data to understand the basic biology of aging and drive drug development decisions. You will lead efforts to develop novel methods for analyzing single-cell data (e.g., scRNAseq, scATACseq, CITEseq) and to combine them with other data modalities such as in-situ multiplexed imaging (e.g., MIBI-ToF, CODEX) and physiological sensor data across a variety of both in-vivo and in-vitro models. These methods will be used to design experiments and identify therapeutic targets. The candidate will also be responsible for the analysis and interpretation of data in support of Calico’s translational activities. This may include analysis of NGS, imaging and proteomics datasets, mining publicly available data sources and designing data-driven follow-up experiments. This role requires the ability to communicate computational results and outcomes to scientists in both quantitative and non-quantitative disciplines, as well as to external collaborators at AbbVie, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and others.

As a member of the Calico’s Computing team, you will work closely with a cross-functional group of computational biologists, machine learning engineers, data scientists, translational project leads, scientists, and biostatisticians to advance Calico’s pipeline. This role offers a unique opportunity to innovate at the leading edge of data science and quantitative systems pharmacology.

Responsibilities:

  • Apply, extend and develop cutting-edge computational methods for analyzing single-cell -omics / NGS data. Develop models for analyzing such data in combination with other paired data modalities
  • Lead and mentor a team of biologists and computational scientists
  • Collaborate with other data scientists and engineers to develop rigorous data-driven methods to support translational drug development
  • Explore high-dimensional phenotypic data (genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, proteomics, and imaging, across multiple biological models) to better understand aging & cancer biology and how these pathologies interact with our developing therapeutics
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in verbal, visual, and written form to stakeholders with varying levels of technical knowledge

Position requirements:

  • Ph.D. /MS in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Statistics, Biological Sciences, Genomics, or equivalent preparation and 3+ years of work experience
  • Expertise in machine learning/probabilistic modeling and methods development for applications in biology (e.g., NGS, single-cell -omics etc.)
  • Experience with high-dimensional biological datasets (e.g., bulk RNAseq, single-cell RNAseq, ribosome profiling, ATACseq/CHIPseq, metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics, microscopy, cell painting)
  • Fluency and familiarity with Python and any of the common ML frameworks (PyTorch, Tensorflow, Jax)
  • Track record of effective cross-functional collaboration
  • Must be willing to work onsite three days a week

The estimated base salary range for this role is $159,000 - $189,000. Actual pay will be based on a number of factors including experience and qualifications. This position is also eligible for two annual cash bonuses.

Calico requires all new hires to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 prior to the first date of employment. As required by applicable law, Calico will consider requests for Reasonable Accommodations.
