Our expertise in building and deploying hardened solutions paired with our partners decades of expertise in an industry lead to very successful outcomes. We are not afraid to take on the challenges of any industry, and have applications in a wide variety of ways: floor scrubbing, boating, logistics, industrial inspection, precision positioning, mining, off-road autonomy, and minesweeping. Whether you already have an interest in robotics, or are just joining the field and are looking to find your “niche”, Carnegie Robotics is the place for you.

As an experienced Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for all aspects of the design process: from breaking down requirements to create a concept design, through production, and testing; all in the support of the most advanced robotic systems. You will work among a proven team of technical experts and leaders to work across the disciplines of mechanical, electrical, systems and software, to support programs. You must be self-motivated and possess a high level of technical curiosity to elevate the quality and ingenuity of our products.

Current Opportunities:

  • Autonomous vehicle integration and support
    • Supporting Autonomous off road vehicle program level initiatives
    • Direct mechanical engineering effort:
      • Wheel and hub motor integration on hybrid off road vehicle
      • Cooling system with thermal loops for off road vehicle braking system
      • Transition from fully electric off road vehicle to diesel hybrid with autonomy package including but not limited to sensor layout, FOV studies, system layout.
  • Stereo Camera development and support
    • Functional testing of camera hardware versus environmental and performance requirements.
    • Camera mechanical and thermal design for integration of cameras into various internal and customer platforms.
  • Autonomous Platform integration
    • Design for integration of cameras into various internal and customer platforms. (Ex: vehicles, quadrupeds, buildings)
    • Simulation based concept analysis of structural mounting, thermal environment and cable routing.
    • Rapid prototype, bench test, and field test to verify design performance
    • Transition to production
  • Ruggedized Electronics Packaging
    • Direct design, planning, and execution of vibration, thermal, impact, and strength tests. Destructive and non-destructive.
    • Operate and monitor testing in our on-site state of the art test facilities: shaker table, thermal chambers, salt spray / humidity chamber, impact / drop test.
    • Incorporate lessons learned into design improvements aimed at improving durability and performance of our rugged products in their harsh operating environments.

What your day to day is:

  • Owning the mechanical decision making for selected products or programs
  • Derive requirements from customer requests and develop product solutions to fit their needs.
  • Designing robotic components and subsystems to withstand harsh environments: automotive, all-terrain, military vehicle shock & overpressure, salt spray, extreme temperature
  • Performing first principles analysis to inform early component selection and system design
  • Developing and interrogating detailed simulations (FEM or similar) and analysis to verify design decisions and optimize for key performance criteria such as: strength, fatigue, modal tuning, random vibration, thermal, effects of tolerances
  • Procuring and assembling prototype hardware
  • Conducting rigorous environmental testing (thermal, vibration, humidity) on new designs to inform the iterative design process
  • Managing the design iteration process to optimize designs
  • Owning of dimensioning and tolerancing scheme to ensure successful interface and function
  • Reviewing and approving 2-D drawings and documentation with GD&T and SPC fundamentals for new product development or sustaining engineering support
  • Providing technical support on the manufacturing floor and junior engineers
  • Troubleshooting malfunctioning products, work with stakeholders to find a solution, then perform modification and repair when necessary.
  • Designing tooling and fixtures for both verification and manufacturing
  • Collaborating with electrical and software engineering teams to support product design and development.
  • Working with and leading Engineering Technicians to fabricate and assemble prototypes, conduct testing, and machining and tooling hardware to ensure product development utilizing ISO standards.
  • Conducting periodic design reviews through our design gates for product development both internal and external while maintaining a fast paced schedule.
