Job Description

Abt is seeking an experienced data scientist with advanced analytic and programming skills to join its growing team in the Digital and Data Services (DDS) Division. This division plays a key role within Abt providing data science methods, data visualization, statistical consulting, and advanced analytics to a broad range of government agencies, university researchers, foundations, and corporations. Much of their work is focused on public policy, evaluation, and data modernization in such areas as health policy, epidemiology, education, food safety, urban planning, the environment, and public opinion, both within the US and internationally.

The Data Scientist works with internal and external clients on the valid and reliable applications of primary and secondary data, with a special focus on open text data, to answer complex technical questions. They will perform work with data and perform advanced analyses such as machine learning and natural language processing. In addition, the successful candidate will independently and collaboratively develop analysis plans, communicate the strength and weaknesses of various analyses, and identify and apply appropriate analytic techniques across a range of data types.

The selected candidate must be an expert at data science programming, with preference given to experience with Python and/or R.

The Data Scientist will preferably work on-site in Abt’s offices in any of Atlanta, GA, Cambridge, MA, Durham, NC, or Rockville, MD. in a hybrid remote/in-person status being on-site at least two days per week at one of these locations. However, a full-time remote condition could be considered in an ideal situation.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

The successful hire will be able to perform the following functions:

  • Experience with Natural Language Processing (NLP) and text mining.
  • Perform data management tasks (data wrangling, cleaning, merging, ETL, feature creation) with text, survey, and/or other data as needed.
  • Mentor junior professionals in data management and analytic tasks
  • Must have proven technical expertise with both applied and theoretical work in text analytics. This can be through publications, white papers, conference presentations, GitHub repositories, and/or software packages.
  • Successful candidate needs to have demonstrated experience working with large and/or complex datasets.
  • Serve as a scientific/technical resource and supervise other staff in application of machine learning and natural language processing.
  • Provide thought leadership in relevant areas of expertise
  • Must have demonstrated experience in writing, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to discuss analytic topics with lay audiences of different levels of analytic sophistication

Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference given to those with experience with cloud computing services (e.g. AWS, Azure).
  • Preference given to those with experience with statistical computing software such as SAS, Stata, or SPSS.
  • Preference given to those with experience in business development, client relationship management and supervision/staff development.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree + Nine years of relevant experience, or Master’s Degree + Seven years of relevant experience, or PhD + Four years of relevant experience

This position offers an anticipated annual base salary range of approximately $105,120.07 to $168,192.11 and may vary by ten percent depending on candidate geographic location. Salary offers are made based on internal equity and market analysis.
