Tempus is seeking a highly qualified advanced-degree Summer Associate to work with us for the summer of 2023. We are looking for people who can change the world.

As a Summer Intern at Tempus, you will:

• Apply skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to on-the-job experiences
• Work on comprehensive, value-added project(s) that help enhance the fields of science and technology 
• Collaborate with teams/colleagues in a fast-paced environment 
• Gain professional development & build relationships with peers from across the country 

Anticipated Summer Project(s):

• Project #1: Design and prototype an end-to-end Information Extraction system to structure key test results from free-text genetic reports. 
• Project #2 (if applicable): Design and prototype a Temporal Reasoning method for Temporal Information Extraction from clinical notes. 
• In the summer project(s), you will be expected to do a brief review of related work in the domain and apply your knowledge to build robust NLP model(s) to unlock valuable information from free-text clinical notes.

Qualifications:

• Pursuing a Master’s or Ph.D. (advanced degree graduation between winter of 2023 and summer of 2024)
• Pursuing a Master’s or Ph.D in a quantitative or computational field such as Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Machine Learning, Biomedical Informatics or related field.
• Experience and Solid understanding in modern Deep Learning and Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, including information extraction techniques, large language models, Transformers and attention mechanisms.
• Familiar with Electronic Health Records (EHR) data, clinical terminologies and clinical notes.
• Familiar with machine learning frameworks like scikit-learn and deep learning frameworks like Pytorch, Tensorflow, or Keras
• Proficient in Python and SQL
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in a variety of settings and media.
• Strong computer skills, including advanced knowledge of Google Suite and Gmail, preferred.
• A self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with others in a fast-paced environment is critical. Be ready to fly the plane as you’re still building it!

Additional Details:

• New York office: You will spend 8 or 10 weeks working in our New York office.
• The internship will be a hybrid, onsite 3 days/week with the option to work remotely the remaining days.
• The program will run in two waves, commencing June/July and running through August/September (dependent upon your school calendar and availability).
• A competitive hourly wage will be provided for the summer employment and a relocation bonus to help offset some of the relocation costs and resources to help you find housing.

The expected salary range below is applicable if the role is performed from [New York] and may vary for other locations. Actual salary may vary based on qualifications and experience. Tempus offers a full range of benefits, which may include incentive compensation, restricted stock units, medical and other benefits, depending on the position.
