Job Description

Key to insitro’s approach to rethinking drug development is deriving a deep understanding of the genetic architecture of human disease and how genetics shape high-content phenotypes, both of in vitro model systems and human clinical data. As the head of our Statistical Genetics team, you will lead the development of cutting-edge statistical approaches and workflows to analyze large-scale human cohorts with genetic and multi-dimensional, multi-modal phenotypic data. These data will be obtained from public sources, through collaborations, and generated in-house by our high-throughput biology lab.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead and grow a team of talented statistical geneticists and data scientists
  • Work with counterparts in our biology and therapeutic area project teams to define and execute analyses that will uncover actionable insights regarding cell types, pathways, genes, exposures, and biomarkers that are relevant to human disease
  • Collaborate with our wet-lab biologists to define the experimental design for in-house disease modeling and screening efforts
  • Collaborate with therapeutic area leaders to use these insights to identify therapeutic targets whose modulation is likely to have high efficacy and low toxicity
  • Collaborate with leaders in our Corporate Development and Strategy function to identify and obtain data sets that are enabling of our work
  • Partner with machine learning teams to ideate and develop cutting-edge methods for identifying structure in these dense phenotypic datasets.
  • Partner with software and data engineering teams to rapidly ingest and process large-scale datasets, and deploy algorithms at scale
  • Work with clinical teams to develop strategies to accelerate clinical development via better patient selection and/or predictive biomarkers of patient state.

You will be joining a biotech startup that has long-term stability due to significant funding, providing many opportunities for meaningful impact. You will work closely with a very talented team, learn a broad range of skills, and help shape insitro’s culture, strategic direction, and outcomes. Join us, and help make a difference to patients!

About You

  • Ph.D. in statistics, genetics, computational biology or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
  • An outstanding scientific track record in your area of expertise
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience, with a focus on the use of genetics to interpret clinical data with relevance to human disease
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, with at least 5 years in a team leadership role
  • Strong fundamentals in multivariate statistics and demonstrated track record in developing and using cutting-edge methods in statistical genetics, including post-GWAS analysis, Mendelian Randomization, variant interpretation, pathway analysis, etc.
  • Considerable exposure to modern-day machine learning tools, including deep learning
  • Experience working with modern, large-scale genetic databases (e.g. ExAC/gnomAD, UK Biobank, UK10K, EBI GWAS Catalog, 1KG, etc.), including demonstrated ability to build software infrastructure to enable robust, scalable statistical analysis of such datasets
  • Experience working with multi-dimensional, high-content phenotypes, such as transcriptional or proteomic profiles, imaging (histopathology, MRI, PET, etc.), or clinical time series (EKG, EEG)
  • Ability to communicate effectively and collaborate with people of diverse backgrounds and job functions
  • A strong desire to expand the capabilities of statistical genetics approaches using modern machine learning methods
  • Passion for making a difference in the world and helping others

Nice to Have

  • Experience working with genomic data from different modalities (DNA sequencing, RNA-seq, proteomics, DNA accessibility assays, etc.)
  • Experience working with wet-lab colleagues on experimental design, with a particular focus on data sets that enable genotype-phenotype mapping in human in vitro systems
  • Experience integrating genetic studies from diverse populations, including correcting for population structure, ethnicity or differences between genotyping platforms
  • Familiarity with modern compute environments and tools, such as cloud computing services (e.g., AWS or GCP), workflow management tools or batch scheduling systems (e.g., SLURM), Linux environment, database languages (e.g., SQL), and version control practices and tools (e.g. Git)
  • Exposure to the use of statistical genetics to enable drug discovery
  • Hands-on experience with cutting-edge machine learning methods

Benefits at insitro
