  • Position: Data Science Intern
  • Reporting To: Senior Director, Data Science and Machine Learning
  • Start Date:June 5 - August 11, 2023 (dates flexible; 40 hrs per week). 
  • Location: New York, NY

Position Summary

The overall goal is to engage our members to promote better health outcomes. Our analytics group (the Health Engine) contributes directly to our product through careful curation of data, analysis, visualization, and presentations. As a member of our team, you will help deliver projects from beginning to end: frame business questions, collect and analyze data, research, complete analyses, and share insights. You will work collaboratively within a team aiming to make a positive impact on the organization and on our members’ overall health.

The intern will be part of a small cohort from different departments that will receive mentoring and meet regularly to ensure support and learning.

Responsibilities

  • Structure data to tell a story, i.e., deliver meaningful reports and dashboards, effective metrics, and visualizations in support of operational performance and strategic objectives. Help improve our data-driven decision making by contributing to data management, data governance, and democratizing insights across the organization.
  • Create predictive models using current and emerging methodologies in machine learning. Help improve our recommendation engines, natural language processing/understanding, member reward pricing, marketing optimizations, clinical analytics, and enhance our data-driven decision making. 
  • Leverage and utilize a wide range of disparate data sources across healthcare (member, payor, employer, provider, partner). Contribute an understanding of healthcare data and analyze large longitudinal health datasets.
  • Develop and contribute to our data and analytical ecosystem working to enhance intelligence and develop insights that improve business decisions.
  • You will take personal responsibility for keeping all Well systems and data, including sensitive member data, secure and safe, according to Well data and security policies and HIPAA guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Working towards a bachelor's or graduate degree in a quantitative field.
  • Demonstrated experience using Python for data analysis and machine learning. 
  • Demonstrated experience producing visualizations and dashboards using Tableau or other visualization tools.
  • Proficiency with SQL and databases.
  • Great communication and collaboration skills required. Ability to communicate technical modeling concepts and relevant aspects of modeling platforms to non-technical audiences.
