Job Description

At Deepgram, we spend every day tackling big, real-world challenges in speech. Our customers hire us to solve their hardest problems in speech, taking real, complex audio and transforming it into novel insights. Our Research Engineers are core to making research into production and into the hands of customers as seamlessly as possible, transitioning research into engineering and building the underlying systems that power the research team. These challenges provide opportunities for creativity and innovative problem-solving every day.

Deepgram is looking for a Research Engineer to tackle some of the most exciting and difficult problems that arise on the bleeding edge of productionized and applied research. From day one, you will be taking Deepgram’s latest models, hyper-optimizing them, and implementing them in our production environment for massively high-throughput, low-latency use cases. Additionally, you will work cross-functionally with research, engineering, and product teams to lead the identification and investigation of opportunities to improve our existing research infrastructure and tooling, automated training, and model evaluation/monitoring. If you enjoy owning the most important problems end-to-end and have high curiosity and willingness to pick up whatever knowledge is missing to get the job done, you will find our work here uniquely challenging and rewarding.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, develop, and maintain the tools & infrastructure required to support cutting-edge AI research projects.
  • Design and build effective metrics for measuring the performance of our models.
  • Deploy new models to production.
  • Envision and build new tools to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our research environment.
  • Configure systems (software, hardware, network, etc.) for optimal machine learning performance, and deploy massively scaled, multi-node training jobs.

You’ll Love This Role If You

  • Respond to new challenges by taking initiative, making a plan, following the data, and communicating your results to the team for feedback.
  • Like working closely with engineering to understand the production environment and how to transition research work into production.
  • Have experience optimizing research models to meet scaling, throughput, and latency requirements in production.
  • Enjoy analyzing new datasets for untapped potential and brainstorming with other researchers to define new research tooling and ecosystem needs.

It’s Important To Us That You Have

  •  5+ years of experience in machine learning research and/or systems engineering, with a solid understanding of how to deploy optimized analytics or machine learning models into production settings.
  • Familiarity with building complex research tooling and data processing pipelines.
  • Strong engineering skills, such as system design, front/backend systems, reliability, and debugging.

It Would Be Great if You Had

  • Proficiency with Python, and one other systems language
  • Proficiency navigating UNIX-style systems with a strong understanding of system fundamentals (e.g., kernel and hardware concerns, system tuning).

Deepgram is an equal opportunity employer. We want all voices and perspectives represented in our workforce. If you think that you have what it takes, possess transferable skills, are quick to learn, but don’t necessarily satisfy every requirement, we would love to hear from you!
