The Data Scientist position with our Minneapolis Health and Life practice will assist in researching and implementing value-added machine learning solutions in the health and long-term care insurance domains in order to continuously improve our offerings that support our clients’ needs.

The Department/Team

The data science team is a growing group of data scientists, actuaries, and software engineers involved in work that supports all areas of the practice. The analyses and techniques used are cutting edge while providing clients with accurate and easily interpreted business results. We are a flexible group that supports any of our clients’ needs. Our work includes developing innovative modeling solutions, technical peer reviews, and fairness testing of machine learning algorithms, and ad-hoc analyses. The clients we serve include industry-leading insurance and tech companies, world-renowned hospital systems, and agile startups. Employees balance working independently and collaborating with other team members within the Minneapolis practice and Milliman practices around the world on a variety of projects. Data scientists and subject matter experts work closely together to ensure solutions are both statistically rigorous and solve the correct problem for the client.

Role

You will:

  • Work creatively and independently to pursue novel solutions to interesting problems,
  • Process large data sets for predictive models and visualization,
  • Develop data visualizations,
  • Develop tools and code to be used by others with limited programing experience,
  • Create models for analyzing and predicting various risks,
  • Evaluate candidate models based on predictive power, ease of implementation, explainability, and other criteria,
  • Present results to peers and project leaders,
  • Draft written reports and prepare other external/internal correspondence,
  • Prepare and document project files,
  • Assist with research and business development projects, and
  • Check other’s work for technical accuracy.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A college degree in a STEM related discipline such as actuarial science, mathematics, data science, statistics, computer science, or other quantitative field, 
  • Fluency in R, Python, Scala, or SQL, 
  • Demonstrated ability to summarize, explore, and manipulate large data sets, 
  • Able to employ a variety of supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods for structured/tabular datasets, and
  • GPA 3.0 or higher.

Desired:

  • 0-2 years of experience in healthcare, insurance, or a related field,
  • Master’s or PhD in a STEM related discipline such as actuarial science, mathematics, data science, statistics, computer science, or other quantitative field,
  • Excellent communication skills,
  • Curiosity, creativity, and self-direction,
  • Good understanding of the math and statistics that support machine learning efforts,
  • Good Data Wrangling skills,
  • Interest or passion in the healthcare industry and solving problems related to protecting the health and financial well-being of people everywhere,
  • Experience with version control and state management tools such as Git and Docker,
  • Experience scaling data engineering and machine learning pipelines with parallel/distributed processing with tools such as Apache Spark, and/or cloud platforms such as Databricks,
  • Experience using cloud resources provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and/or Microsoft Azure, and 
  • GPA 3.5 or higher.

Qualifications

Education Required

Bachelors or better in Mathematics or related field.

Experience Preferred

Less than 2 years: Experience in healthcare, insurance, or a related field.

Experience with version control and state management tools such as Git and Docker. Experience scaling data engineering and machine learning pipelines with parallel/distributed processing with tools such as Apache Spark, and/or cloud platforms such as Databricks. Experience using cloud resources provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and/or Microsoft Azure.
