Job Description

We are seeking a motivated individual with a background in biology, genomics, and programming to work on our novel enzyme discovery platform. Reporting to the Infrastructure & Analytics lead, this position will play a crucial role in designing methods to support the discovery and analysis of Metagenomi’s extensive genome editing toolbox, including algorithm development, big data analytics, and pipeline design. This role will be based in Emeryville, CA.

About the Role

By the end of your first year, you will have a chance to demonstrate your ability to:

• Work in concert with software engineers, lab scientists, and data scientists to develop new capabilities for our AWS-based high-throughput discovery and data analysis platform
• Develop discovery algorithms and computational infrastructure that scale efficiently 
• Assist discovery team scientists with large-scale data analyses
• Develop UI-based resources, command line tools, and containerized workflows for use by scientists and engineers company wide
• Coordinate and encourage standardized coding and data management best practices throughout the company
• Lead and collaborate with team members on code reviews

Desired Qualifications

What will enable you to thrive as our new Data Scientist will be:

• B.S or M.S. in Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, a related discipline, or equivalent experience
• 2+ years experience in biotech or related field working on biological data processing and/or analysis
• Demonstrated understanding of common bioinformatics methods (aligners, assemblers, sequencing databases, protein annotation)
• Expert in python programming
• Experience or strong interest in working with cloud computing systems (e.g. AWS) Experience with Docker and building containerized data workflows to handle large scale data streams
• Experience with SQL & NoSQL database design
• Familiarity with software development practices such as unit testing, code reviews, and version control
• Able to quickly learn and adopt new software tools
• Self-motivated, passionate about your work, and eager to continuously learn more
• Understanding of test-driven development and unit testing framework
• Experience with AWS well-architected framework, severless development
• Experience with machine learning applications for complex biological problems (e.g. protein engineering, functional annotation)
• Experience with Nextflow
• Previous experience generating data in a molecular biology/microbiology laboratory setting a plus
